Dr. Antonio Caycedo is chief of colorectal surgery and medical director at Orlando Health Colon and Rectal Institute. He has more than a decade of experience treating patients in several countries and is considered a pioneer in his field. His expertise includes: Complex colorectal cancer surgery Robotic surgery Transanal total mesorectal excision Transanal minimally invasive surgery Magnetic colorectal anastomosis Enhanced recovery after surgery Surgical innovation, program design and multi-hospital quality improvement Dr. Caycedo introduced transanal minimally invasive surgery to Canada and was among the first surgeons to perform transanal total mesorectal excision. He created national training guidelines for the procedures. Dr. Caycedo also co-led the world’s first human trial of magnetic colorectal anastomosis. The possibility of changing someone's life inspires Dr. Caycedo to go the extra mile for his patients. He champions patient-centered, evidence-based care and prioritizes less-invasive approaches that reduce complications, speed recovery and improve long-term outcomes. Dr. Caycedo’s Training Dr. Caycedo received his medical training at El Bosque University in Bogota, Colombia. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Ottawa and a colorectal surgery fellowship at Western University in Ontario. Dr. Caycedo earned a master's degree in clinical research at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. He also graduated from Harvard University's one-year surgical leadership program. About Dr. Caycedo Dr. Caycedo is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Canadian Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Before joining Orlando Health, Dr. Caycedo practiced and taught surgery at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he served as an associate professor. Before that, he developed the first colorectal surgery program in Northern Ontario at Health Sciences North. He continues as a clinical researcher at the Health Sciences Research Institute in Sudbury, Ontario. Dr. Caycedo is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and Florida State University in Tallahassee. He also serves as director of the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer at Orlando Health. He serves on the editorial boards for several surgical journals and has published more than 80 scientific papers and multiple book chapters. He has presented his work at more than 200 national and international lectures, courses and visiting professorships. Outside of work, Dr. Caycedo enjoys exercising and cooking. He is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
