Dr. Elrick specializes in the care of children with neuromuscular disorders, and EMG studies in children and adults. Dr. Elrick earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Michigan Medical School, studying inherited neurodegenerative disorders of childhood. He completed residency training in Pediatrics and Child Neurology, followed by a fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine and Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty in 2019. Dr. Elrick's laboratory research interest is in understanding mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease, especially those affecting motor neurons. He studies disorders caused by genetic mutations in the nuclear pore complex, the main pathway for transport of material in and out of the nucleus of the cell, including Triple A Syndrome. He also participates in clinical research on Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), aimed at understanding susceptibility to AFM in children, and defining clinical and EMG characteristics of illness and recovery in AFM. "My dream at the age of 18 was to become a professional baseball player. I was All-Conference as a freshman at Ursinus College and majored in pre-med as a ""backup plan."" I transferred to Baylor University, and fortunately, as it turned out, I was not good enough to make the higher level team. I therefore concentrated all of my efforts into my academic studies. I had come to realize that my energies were better placed into working toward caring for others. When my mother-in-law developed breast cancer, I developed a passion for breast surgery and general surgery.What I want my patients to know about me:I try to care for you as I would want to be cared for. I have been happily married to my wife, Judy, for over 40 years. I have, as of today, three children and nine grandchildren, who I adore. I have been a part of the Gettysburg/Hanover community for nearly 30 years and as of April, 2024, I will be caring for patients in Chambersburg and Waynesboro areas. Over the years, my general surgical practice has evolved and has become limited to the treatment of breast and thyroid disease.What I do when I'm not seeing patients:I love outdoor activities like hiking. I spend most of my free time with my wife and grandkids. I love traveling, and love to go to the shore/beach.
