Dr. Emily A. Commesso
Overview
I am an ear, nose, and throat surgeon who specializes in sleep surgery. In addition to providing comprehensive ENT care, I focus on surgical treatments for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. I am privileged to bring my sleep surgery training back to Duke, where I completed my residency. My philosophy is centered on an evidence-based approach focused on achieving patient goals. I use research including diagnostic surgical procedures to optimize surgical selection and work with my patients to tailor treatment plans. As a fellowship-trained sleep surgeon, I provide cutting-edge care for snoring and sleep apnea and am constantly evaluating the latest treatments to ensure that I can provide the best care for my patients. I look forward to our consultation. Outside of work, my family (including three young boys), loves hiking the local trails, venturing out to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and eating at the many fantastic Durham and Chapel Hill restaurants.

Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.
Duke Cancer Center
I am a medical oncologist and researcher who specializes in treating patients with lung cancer and head and neck cancer. I’ve been at Duke for eight years. I first realized I wanted to become a doctor in graduate school, because it gave me the opportunity to practically apply scientific evidence to help others. What I love most about my job is working with our research and clinical staff to come up with new and hopeful therapies for patients. When a patient comes to see me, I look at their past and current medical history, review their lab tests, and then work with a team to figure out which treatment would work best for them. If a patient comes from far away, we try to make sure we can fit in visits with all the relevant specialists before they leave. I am grateful to have the opportunity to help people every day who are experiencing voice, breathing or swallowing problems. My goal is to collaborate with patients in a team-based, interdisciplinary approach to restore patients' voices and ability to communicate and perform, swallow, and breathe. I work with patients to personalize treatment decisions to fit their individual needs. This may include medical treatments and/or surgical interventions, as well as voice and swallowing therapy in collaboration with my speech-language pathology and singing voice specialist colleagues.
