
Overview
Erin Hammer, MD, is a sports medicine doctor at UW Health and is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She cares for children, teens and adults who have joint, muscle, and tendon problems or have medical issues that keep them from being active. Dr. Hammer has a special interest in women’s sports medicine, concussions and medical problems in endurance athletes.Her patient care philosophy is that every patient is an athlete, and exercise is medicine. She enjoys helping patients get back to the things they like to do, whether it’s a competitive sport or playing with their grandchildren.Dr. Hammer is a team doctor for the University of Wisconsin Badgers football and wrestling teams. She also travels with the U.S. ski team each winter for races and the World Cup. In her research, she studies ways to prevent sports injuries, including concussions, and evaluates athletes at risk.In her personal time, Dr. Hammer enjoys cross-country skiing, road biking, and running.My hope for each one of my patients is that they can return to the activities they love. That's why they're coming to see me. And so if I can help them achieve their goals, that's my goal, too.

John Wilson, MD, MS, is a UW Health sports medicine doctor. He’s also an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. In addition, he serves as a team physician for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.Dr. Wilson diagnoses and treats individuals of all skill levels with conditions such as arthritis, fractures, overuse injuries and tendinitis (inflamed tendons). Treating chronic (ongoing) conditions and sudden injuries, Dr. Wilson helps people safely return to sports. He guides athletes toward personalized achievement and treatment goals. He works closely with patients and specialists, including physical therapists, rehabilitation doctors, diagnostic imaging experts and others.As an athlete, Dr. Wilson understands the emotional challenges of sports injuries. His holistic approach includes addressing both physical and mental health concerns. Through preventive education and care, he helps athletes improve performance and reduce injury risks.Dr. Wilson also researches tendinopathy (chronic tendon degeneration). His team studies biologics (treatments developed from living organisms), such as platelet-rich plasma (concentrated blood protein) that stimulates healing.Outside of work, Dr. Wilson coaches high school football and enjoys his sons’ sports, theater and musical activities.It’s really rewarding to develop relationships with my patients over the years and to see them achieve their goals and get back to their favorite activities. Dr. Spiker is a team physician for UW Badger Athletics and provides head orthopedic coverage for the UW men’s and women’s basketball teams. She is also the Program Director of the UW Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.Dr. Spiker developed thehip preservationprogram at UW Health to help a broad-range of patients maintain normal hip function. She cares for patients who have athletic injuries of the hip or knee and hip pain or injuries from tears, restricted movement, abnormal growth or dislocation. For hip and knee sports injuries, she performs ACL reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery, and repairs torn knee cartilage and provides guidance on both surgical and non-surgical injury management. Dr. Spiker understands that for certain patients, surgery might not be the right answer. She explains the available treatment options that can improve their daily activity or sports functioning and reduce pain. She uses non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures to help relieve pain and improve range of motion.She has authored numerous textbook chapters, review articles, and peer-reviewed studies and has given local, regional, and national talks and presentations in the areas of sports medicine and hip preservation. She is an active member in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), International Hip Preservation Society (ISHA), Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society, American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leaders Forum, Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) and the Forum.Outside of the clinic, Dr. Spiker enjoys running and spending time with her family and three young children.The most rewarding part of my job is when a patient comes back to the clinic and tells me their surgery has completely changed their life for the better.
