Overview
Dr. Guy Shochat is an emergency care physician who supervises residents and students as they care for patients with urgent conditions. His areas of special interest include managing emergency conditions that affect the airways as well as applications of medical informatics (how to use technology, computer science and design to improve health care). Shochat enjoys using simulation training to teach rarely performed but critical procedures, such as cricothyrotomy (surgically placing a breathing tube directly through the neck into the trachea). Several years ago, he took on management of the electronic health record program for adult emergency medicine at UCSF. He finds this role particularly satisfying because it impacts the day-to-day life of both colleagues and patients, and offered him the challenge of learning an entirely new field in midlife. Shochat's research includes gathering data on emergency intubation (the placement of breathing tubes in patients with respiratory failure). He also works with the intensive care unit to study critically ill patients with low blood pressure. After earning his medical degree at McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Quebec, Canada, Shochat completed a residency in emergency medicine at Kings County Hospital, an affiliate of State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine. He belongs to the American College of Emergency Physicians and Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. In his free time, Shochat loves riding bicycles as part of his travels, as he did on a recent trip to Japan.
His clinical expertise encompasses Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT), and Atrial Tachycardia.
Dr. Shochat is board certified in American Board Of Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine. He is actively involved in clinical research, co-authoring 1 peer reviewed article.
