Overview
I was drawn to the field of medical genetics because of the opportunity it afforded to closely follow patients and families over time and collaborate with families from the perspective of research, in order to answer questions regarding the health concerns of their children. I am eager to push the field forward toward more numerous and effective treatments within the rare disease realm. Throughout my combined pediatrics and medical genetics residency training, I developed a particular clinical and research interest in working toward earlier diagnosis for children with rare disease in order to be able to more effectively treat them. My clinical areas of interest include Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (an epigenetic and genetic overgrowth disorder), genetic neuromuscular disorders (in particular those with cardiac involvement), and lysosomal storage disorders (such as Wolman disease and Pompe disease).
Her clinical expertise encompasses Tetrasomy 9p, Temple Syndrome, Chromosome 2 Uniparental Disomy, Chromosome 6 Uniparental Disomy, and Splenectomy.

I listen carefully to parents when they bring their children to the clinic because they know their children better than any other person, and they are the best advocates for their child. Duke Children's Health Center Hematology/Oncology Clinic
I treat children with cancer and blood disorders, such as anemia and sickle cell disease. When families come in, there is understandably a huge amount of anxiety. I try to spend a lot of time with them and discuss what we know, what we need to find out, and how we plan to care for their children. My goal is to make it the least scary as possible for both the children and the parents/caregivers while providing the best care. Even in the setting of severe illness, interacting with children is uplifting and extremely rewarding. Children truly demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit. What I love most about my job is having relationships with children and seeing them grow; it is a wonderful experience. Dr. Rothman is highly rated in 11 conditions, according to our data.
