Overview
Jithin Yohannan, M.D., M.P.H. is Boone Pickens Rising Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His practice specializes in medical, laser, and surgical treatment of glaucoma, focusing on minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and new glaucoma surgical devices. He also performs both routine and complex cataract surgery. Dr. Yohannan also specializes in the surgical management of complex problems of the anterior segment (front of the eye). These problems include issues arising after trauma or prior surgery gone wrong, such as dislocated intraocular lenses (IOL) or iris and pupil defects. Dr. Yohannan earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from New York University, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then received his medical and master of public health degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. From there, he served as a fellow in glaucoma and advanced anterior segment surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Yohannan then returned to Wilmer to serve as Assistant Chief of Service for one year, after which he joined the glaucoma division. Dr. Yohannan holds a joint appointment at the Malone Center of Engineering in Healthcare. He leads a lab that focuses on using artificial intelligence algorithms to aid in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma patients. He has a background in biostatistics, epidemiology, and mathematics, which enables this effort. His group has developed AI models that forecast high-risk glaucoma patients and is focused on translating these models for clinical application. Additionally, his group aims to understand how we can optimize structural and functional glaucoma testing to improve the detection of glaucoma worsening. Dr. Yohannan also has a clinical and research interest in novel surgical devices used to treat glaucoma. These devices promise to make glaucoma surgery safer and easier to recover from. He has a background in biostatistics, epidemiology, and mathematics which enables this effort. The ultimate goal of this research is to detect glaucoma and determine when it is worsening more accurately. The results of this work will ultimately help guide doctors who are managing glaucoma to make better treatment decisions. Dr. Yohannan also has a clinical and research interest in novel surgical devices used to treat glaucoma. These devices hold the promise of making glaucoma surgery safer and easier to recover from.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital
Peter A. Campochiaro, M.D. is the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a clinician-scientist who directs a research laboratory and conducts clinical trials. His laboratory research is directed at understanding the pathogenesis of ocular neovascularization and excessive retinal vascular permeability, and the mechanism of cone cell death in inherited retinal degenerations. He helped to determine the importance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hypoxia-inducible factor-1, and Tie2 in retinal and choroidal vascular diseases. The clinical trial group under Dr. Campochairo provided the first demonstration of the benefits of suppression of VEGF in diabetic macular edema and retinal vein occlusion. He has developed strategies for sustained suppression of VEGF that are currently being tested in clinical trials. Dr. Campochiaro trained at the University of Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the University of Virginia. He did a vitreoretinal fellowship and research fellowships at Johns Hopkins and joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1984. He became professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins in 1991. Dr. Campochiaro is highly rated in 18 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Retinal Vein Occlusion, Late-Onset Retinal Degeneration, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Trabeculectomy, and Vitrectomy.
