Dr. M A. Brooks

John Wilson, MD, MS, is a UW Health sports medicine doctor. He’s also an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. In addition, he serves as a team physician for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.Dr. Wilson diagnoses and treats individuals of all skill levels with conditions such as arthritis, fractures, overuse injuries and tendinitis (inflamed tendons). Treating chronic (ongoing) conditions and sudden injuries, Dr. Wilson helps people safely return to sports. He guides athletes toward personalized achievement and treatment goals. He works closely with patients and specialists, including physical therapists, rehabilitation doctors, diagnostic imaging experts and others.As an athlete, Dr. Wilson understands the emotional challenges of sports injuries. His holistic approach includes addressing both physical and mental health concerns. Through preventive education and care, he helps athletes improve performance and reduce injury risks.Dr. Wilson also researches tendinopathy (chronic tendon degeneration). His team studies biologics (treatments developed from living organisms), such as platelet-rich plasma (concentrated blood protein) that stimulates healing.Outside of work, Dr. Wilson coaches high school football and enjoys his sons’ sports, theater and musical activities.It’s really rewarding to develop relationships with my patients over the years and to see them achieve their goals and get back to their favorite activities. Andrea Spiker, MD, is a UW Health orthopedic surgeon and an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She specializes in hip preservation treatment and sports medicine. Dr. Spiker is a team physician for UW Badger Athletics and provides head orthopedic coverage for the UW men’s and women’s basketball teams. She is also the Program Director of the UW Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.Dr. Spiker developed thehip preservationprogram at UW Health to help a broad-range of patients maintain normal hip function. She cares for patients who have athletic injuries of the hip or knee and hip pain or injuries from tears, restricted movement, abnormal growth or dislocation. For hip and knee sports injuries, she performs ACL reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery, and repairs torn knee cartilage and provides guidance on both surgical and non-surgical injury management. Dr. Spiker understands that for certain patients, surgery might not be the right answer. She explains the available treatment options that can improve their daily activity or sports functioning and reduce pain. She uses non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures to help relieve pain and improve range of motion.She has authored numerous textbook chapters, review articles, and peer-reviewed studies and has given local, regional, and national talks and presentations in the areas of sports medicine and hip preservation. She is an active member in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), International Hip Preservation Society (ISHA), Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society, American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leaders Forum, Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) and the Forum.Outside of the clinic, Dr. Spiker enjoys running and spending time with her family and three young children.The most rewarding part of my job is when a patient comes back to the clinic and tells me their surgery has completely changed their life for the better. This includes arthritis, fractures, dislocations and tears. He specializes in reconstruction, repair and replacement surgeries, such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus transplant and Tommy John surgery. Dr. Cotter also offers non-surgical treatment options.Dr. Cotter enjoys listening to his patients’ stories. By understanding their backgrounds and goals, he helps his patients return to doing what they love. A firm believer in evidence-based medicine, Dr. Cotter explains each available treatment option during important health decisions. He talks to his patients about their mental health when healing and getting back to sports.In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Cotter researches clinical outcomes of cartilage restoration procedures in the knee. He also studies soft tissue balancing and reverse shoulder arthroplasty procedures.In his free time, Dr. Cotter enjoys spending time with family and chasing around his two kids.My goal is to help my patients get back to doing what they love with as little pain as possible.
