Dr. Richard Andrassy earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and completed an internship and residency at Wilford Hall Medical College, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He finished a second residency in pediatric surgery at the University of Southern California and a fellowship in pediatric surgical oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Board certified in general surgery and pediatric surgery, Dr. Andrassy’s clinical interests include abdominal wall reconstruction, hernias, and thyroid and parathyroid disease. In practice since 1980, he treats patients of all ages and speaks Spanish. Dr. Andrassy is professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, where he holds the Denton A. Cooley, MD, Chair in Surgery and the Jack H. Mayfield, M.D., Distinguished University Chair in Surgery. He has been recognized with the 2009 Arnold M. Salzberg Mentorship Award, the 2006 Houston Surgical Distinguished Surgeon of the Year, and numerous UTHealth Dean's Teaching Excellence Awards. A Memorial-area resident, Dr. Andrassy is married to a physician and has three daughters and six grandchildren. His favorite leisure-time interests are golf, hunting and his grandkids.

He completed his Pediatric Surgery Training at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He joined The University on August 1, 2007. Dr. Tsao is a clinical researcher with interests in diseases of the neonate and children. His primary research is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal gastroesophageal reflux disease as it relates to chronic lung disease of prematurity. Dr. Tsao has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on several prospective clinical trials.
