An internationally known leader in hematology, A. Samer Al-Homsi, MD, MBA, is system chief of blood and marrow transplant and cellular therapy at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, where he also serves as director of faculty and academic affairs in medical oncology. In his position, Dr. Al-Homsi treats patients in need of blood and marrow transplantation for blood cancers and other blood conditions. Dr. Al-Homsi attended medical school at Damascus University Faculty of Medicine, did his residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Illinois, and completed a fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA. He also received training and practiced in France. He came to Northwell from the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health, where he was executive director of transplantation and cellular therapy. His research efforts throughout his career have focused on innovations that lead to better patient care in blood and marrow transplantation. The poet Kahlil Gibran wrote that work is love made visible, and I believe medicine is love made visible, says Dr. Al-Homsi. Every patient has unique needs, based not just on their specific condition, but also on their cultural background, family situation, and the impact of their disease. We're fortunate at Northwell to have care delivered by a large team that's there to address all those aspects.Dr. Al-Homsi is looking forward to advancing more clinical research at Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. That will likely facilitate the development of more therapies that can treat patients, he says, and in a way that's safer and more effective.Dr. Al-Homsi doesn't just focus on the physical effects of conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma with decades of patient care, he also knows the tremendous value of a deeper conversation about how cancer is affecting patients mental health and everyday function. His priority is to learn about the patient first and the disease second. That perspective on patient advocacy and approaching each interaction with compassion and love is the same now as it was when he first entered medical school, he recalls. I wanted my life to matter, and to make a difference, he says. I'm not trying to change the world, but I can change patients' lives. I can change their world, and that's incredibly rewarding and meaningful. Dr. Al is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in Bone Marrow Transplant. His top areas of expertise are Graft Versus Host Disease (GvHD), Multiple Myeloma, Adult T-Cell Leukemia, Chronic T-Cell Leukemia (CTCL), and Bone Marrow Transplant.

I am a pediatric hematologist/oncologist who specializes in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. I graduated from the Upstate Medical University, completed a residency in pediatrics at the Schneider Children's Hospital, served as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at the Schneider Children's Hospital, and then completed my training with a fellowship in pediatric hematology / oncology at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. During my fellowship, I concurrently spent 3 years in the laboratory researching cellular immunotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, while also pursuing a clinical interest in the late effects of childhood cancer treatment. In 2008 I came to the Cohen Children s Medical Center to found Survivors Facing Forward, a long-term follow-up program to provide care to survivors of childhood cancer and stem cell transplantation. Since 2008, the program has grown to follow nearly 1,000 survivors of childhood cancer and has been a fertile source for clinical research. In 2021 I assumed leadership of the stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy program at Cohen Children's Medical Center, where I am the Transplant Center Medial Director and Marrow Collection Facility Director. Our transplant center participates in national and international cooperative group studies in the use of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy to treat cancers, bone marrow failure syndromes, immune deficiencies and hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell disease and thalassemia). Notably, we are one of a very limited number of Qualified Treatment Centers (QTC) for Zynteglo , an FDA approved gene therapy for transfusion dependent thalassemia, and are in the process of being named a QTC for gene therapy products recently FDA approved to cure sickle cell disease. What is the definition of Bone Marrow Transplant?

A bone marrow transplant is a procedure to replace damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.

Bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside your breastbone (sternum) and pelvic bones. Your bone marrow produces blood cells. Stem cells in your bone marrow give rise to all of your different blood cells.

When should I see a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor near Mineola, NY?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor near Mineola, NY?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Bone Marrow Transplant doctors near Mineola, NY?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Bone Marrow Transplant doctors near Mineola, NY?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor near Mineola, NY?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Bone Marrow Transplant doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Bone Marrow Transplant doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor near Mineola, NY?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Bone Marrow Transplant doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Bone Marrow Transplant doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Bone Marrow Transplant doctors near Mineola, NY?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Bone Marrow Transplant doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Bone Marrow Transplant doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
