Dr. Shahzad Mian serves as Chair and professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School and has served the department as vice chair for clinical sciences and learning since 2019. Dr. Soong was born in Tokyo, Japan of Chinese parents who had emigrated from Shanghai in 1949. Upon graduation from high school, he came to the United States 1967 and received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from MIT, after which attended graduate school at Cornell University in electrical engineering and neurophysiology.
