Dr. Detlev Erdmann
Overview
I have been a Professor of Plastic Surgery at Duke University and the University of Heidelberg, Germany since 2003. I am part-time affiliated with the Durham VA Medical Center, Section of Plastic Surgery serving our veterans and their families. I enjoy working in an academic environment and being able to cover a variety of plastic surgery cases. My main interest is plastic and reconstructive surgery, including repair of the abdomen and chest, breast, extremities, and face, head, and neck surgery, including microsurgery. My passion is to provide body contouring procedures for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, such as after gastric bypass surgery. When on call, I mainly treat hand upper extremity trauma-related injuries and other emergencies.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.
Duke Cancer Center
As an otolaryngologist, I treat people with common ear, nose, and throat complaints, including enlarged thyroid gland, hoarseness, and swallowing difficulties. I also do complex reconstructive surgeries following trauma or cancer operations. I specialize in caring for patients with cancer of the facial skin, mouth, throat, thyroid, salivary glands, and voice box. When my dad had cancer, seeing the amazing care he received made me want to treat this wonderful patient population. I love getting to know my patients on a personal level and establishing real relationships with them during the years that I follow them.
