Overview
Mona Kaleem, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. She is a fellowship trained glaucoma and cataract surgeon in Bethesda, Maryland. She is broadly trained in the medical and surgical care of glaucoma. Her excellence in patient care, teaching, and research activities resulted in her selection to the American Glaucoma Society. She was also selected by her peers as a Baltimore Magazine “Top Doctor” in 2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2020, Dr. Kaleem was honored with the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Achievement Award. Dr. Kaleem was born and raised in Maryland. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics with double minors in Biology and Chemistry at Smith College prior to entering the Howard University College of Medicine. There, she was a Trustee Scholar and awardee of the Malcolm X Scholarship due to her leadership in community service. She completed her medical training at Mercy Medical Center, Howard University Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic. She has a strong interest in volunteerism and has participated in medical missions globally and in underserved areas within the United States. Dr. Kaleem is also known for her involvement in grass roots legislative efforts that impact the way that ophthalmology care is delivered and received in the United States. She is one of the hosts of the Diagnosis Glaucoma podcast and co-authored the book Glaucoma: What Every Patient Should Know with Dr. Harry Quigley. Dr. Harry A. Quigley is the A. Edward Maumenee Professor of Ophthalmology and developed the Glaucoma Division at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. He was a founding member of the American Glaucoma Society, serving for 8 years as its Secretary and was elected to 5 year terms as chief executive officer of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and editor-in-chief of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles, and his reports are the most cited in the ophthalmic literature over the last 30 years (Archives of Ophthalmology, 2007). His research has improved the early diagnosis of glaucoma and has developed instruments and techniques to identify glaucoma damage better. He has participated in pioneering studies of the epidemiology, morbidity and progression rate of glaucoma and other eye disease in American, African, Asian and Hispanic populations, serving as a consultant to the World Health Organization. In the laboratory, he has demonstrated successful gene therapy to protect retinal ganglion cells from experimental glaucoma and developed glaucoma models in monkeys, rats and mice. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Sinai Hospital and his residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute.
