Dr. Deb Bhowmick

I am an academic board-certified spine surgeon with more than 25 years of experience treating spine disease. I address a variety of spinal conditions, including upper cervical instability; cervical degenerative and traumatic disease; thoracic disease and deformity; lumbar degeneration and instability; spinal trauma (cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral); metastatic spine disease; spinal infections; and complex spine conditions. I am returning to Duke with my wife and four children. We have been living in eastern North Carolina where I have been in private practice doing pediatric and adult spinal surgery for 20 years. I am board certified in both orthopaedics and spinal surgery and was drawn to the specialty after working at a Shriner's hospital during my training. I try to approach each individual patient with a few fundamental goals. I first try to listen to what has brought someone into my office and then provide them with a diagnosis. I focus on options for management  both non-operative as well as surgery. I also hope to engage the patient or family to participate in the  decisions as it relates to the treatment options available to them. I’ve wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a suburb of Washington, DC, came to Duke for medical school in 1998, and have been here ever since. I chose neuroscience as my undergraduate major at Amherst University in MA, and stayed with neurosurgery because I was fascinated with the brain and its functions. I enjoy caring for my patients and seeing someone experience a good outcome that positively changed their life. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, who is also a doctor, and our two young daughters. I play golf when I can, which is not often, and really enjoy cooking.
