With over 20 years of experience as a busy general thoracic surgeon, I am referred patients with cancers in the chest and other difficult problems involving all the organs of the chest that are not from cancer. One of the things that attracted me to the field is the long-term relationship with my patients. I tell all my patients that I’m their doctor for life. I see patients for many, many years. Back in 2000, when we had a 26-inch snow here -- it was a Tuesday -- on my clinic day, everyone said no one would come to clinic. But I actually had 23 or 24 patients show up in four-wheel drives. It’s not that I’m such a fabulous doctor that they came to see me. It’s that they are cancer patients and this was their annual visit or their follow up. It was important to them. So we were here for them, and they came. I enjoy seeing my patients back 12, 13, 14 years later and learning what they’ve been up to and what their families have been up to. That’s a bond you get in oncology that a lot of other fields don’t have that treat patients then turn them back over to their primary care physicians. We as a team follow people, and I like that. Dr. Harpole is highly rated in 14 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), Endoscopy, and Advanced Bronchoscopy.

The majority of my practice focuses on abdominal wall surgery and the repair of ventral, incisional, and inguinal (groin) hernias. I chose to specialize in minimally invasive surgery because I saw the incredible benefits that these procedures provide for patients. By performing complex surgeries using either laparoscopic or robotic instruments, I am able to get patients back to their normal daily activities much faster and with significantly less pain. Whether I am repairing a hernia, performing surgery for weight loss, or helping to treat reflux, I will always try to offer a minimally invasive approach first and foremost. When I get the chance to meet you in the clinic we will discuss all of the possible treatment options for your condition and we will work as a team to pick which is the best choice for you. I feel incredibly fortunate to practice at Duke Health where we have incredible resources to take care of you no matter what problem you may have. I look forward to working with you and caring for you and your family. Dr. Greenberg is highly rated in 10 conditions, according to our data. I specialize in treating patients with complex abdominal wall hernias and foregut conditions, such as acid reflux, hiatal hernias, and swallowing disorders. I am passionate about helping people return to the activities and quality of life they enjoy. By using minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery, I am able to repair complex problems in a way that often leads to less pain and a quicker recovery. I understand that surgery can feel overwhelming, and my goal is to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible. I believe in listening closely to each patient’s goals and working together to create a treatment plan that fits their needs and values. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring the outdoors, and staying active on the golf course. I look forward to caring for you and your family. I am a colorectal surgeon and researcher who has been at Duke for about 25 years. I see patients who have issues with the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. These issues include benign tumors, cancers, hemorrhoids and fistulas. The best part of my job is operating. The operating room is a special place, where we have been able to put a number of processes in place so things run smoothly and we can give patients the best chance at a good outcome. The fact that you can take a condition, operate and potentially cure a patient is fascinating to me. As a faculty member, I also enjoy when I have the chance to teach residents during the operation. When I am not at work, I enjoy fishing, hiking and playing tennis with my children. Dr. Mantyh is highly rated in 12 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Colorectal Cancer, Genital Warts, Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colostomy, and Ileostomy.

I’m a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist who specializes in the surgical management of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies—including soft tissue sarcomas and pancreas, colorectal and gastric cancers. Many of my patients have advanced malignancies and I am always amazed at their resilience. Their determination to fight inspires me to aggressively pursue every surgical option and to study novel techniques to improve surgical outcomes. One of the most important reasons for patients to be treated at Duke is the emphasis on a team-oriented approach to every patient. Nearly every surgical cancer patient is discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor conference in order to assure state of the art care. When I am not in the hospital, my wife and I can be found chasing our two young children or running with our dog. Dr. Blazer is highly rated in 38 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Adult Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma, Pancreaticoduodenectomy, and Pancreatectomy.

I am a surgical oncologist and researcher who specializes in treating patients with endocrine tumors. Specifically, I see patients who have thyroid cancers, parathyroid disease, adrenal tumors and melanoma. I enjoy taking care of patients with cancers because the amount of trust and faith that they place in their doctors is special. Treating cancers allows you to develop a powerful relationship with a patient and their loved ones in a very short period of time, which is also unique. My favorite part of being a surgeon is seeing a patient with a problem and successfully seeing them through the surgical process. I believe in guiding each patient to their long-term goal based on their specific needs. When I am at home, I enjoy spending time with my family and being active outdoors by running, hiking, or gardening. Dr. Scheri is highly rated in 18 conditions, according to our data. I find the endocrine organs and hormones fascinating and am forever learning new things from my patients. I cherish the overwhelming success in helping control and normalize hormone processes surgically. The hugs, handshakes or tears of joy from my patients at their follow up are the reason I became an endocrine surgeon. In addition to the treatment of aberrant endocrine gland function, I also evaluate any tumor process of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and endocrine pancreas. The unfortunate reality is that many of these tumors are cancerous. My own family has dealt with thyroid cancer. The experiences of my wife and mother-in-law in dealing with the diagnosis of cancer, the surgery, the treatment, the challenge of hormone regulation, the follow up and the reality of cancer recurrence is something that is a part of me and reflected in how I relate to my cancer patients. Dr. Stang is highly rated in 17 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Hyperparathyroidism, Thyroid Nodule, Thyroid Cancer, Thyroidectomy, and Parathyroidectomy.

A significant portion of my practice involves advanced minimally invasive techniques in thoracic surgery to treat diseases such as lung or esophageal cancer. Another part of my clinical practice is spent taking care of patients with severe lung disease, especially those needing lung transplantation. Patients from all over the world come to Duke for lung transplantation. Research demonstrates that experience is very important in taking care of complex medical problems, both on the surgical side and on the medical side. We have one of the largest transplant centers in the world with excellent survival statistics, as well as the shortest wait list time. Instead of the national average which may be four to six months, our patients wait an average of about two weeks. One of the best aspects of being a patient or working at Duke is the people who work here. No matter how challenging the medical problems may be or what problems may arise, I know there’s a world’s expert a phone call away who can help intervene and I know that my patients will be cared for by committed Duke staff from across the hospital. Dr. Hartwig is highly rated in 16 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Hiatal Hernia, Thymic Epithelial Tumor, Endoscopy, and Heart Transplant.

As a surgeon that specializes in the vascular system, which is the body's network of blood vessels, I appreciate that there are many different ways to significantly help people. I truly believe making a connection with a person is one of the most important aspects in patient care. I don’t tell my patients what decision to make about their health. It's my job to understand the priorities in their life and then give them information and guidance to make their own decision. In doing so, a stroke can be prevented by repairing arteries to the brain. Fixing an aneurysm, which is caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery, can save someone from hemorrhaging to death, and treating the arteries to the legs can prevent an amputation or help reduce some causes of severe leg pain. Dr. Shortell is highly rated in 16 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Varicose Veins, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, Carotid Artery Surgery, and Thrombectomy.

I am the chief of pediatric heart surgery at Duke Health. Being a heart surgeon was always a dream of mine as a child. Spending a summer in medical school with legendary pediatric heart surgeon, Aldo Castaneda, cemented my desire to devote my life to this profession. Clinically, I love the creativity, complexity and challenge associated with my work. I am also able to satisfy my investigational curiosities through an active basic and clinical research laboratory focusing on congenital heart disease. I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to fulfill this dream back at Duke, a place that was so influential in my surgical training. Outside the hospital, I most enjoy spending time with my wife of 20+ years and three young children. We are an active family, always on the go… which mirrors my life at work. I specialize in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) tract. Specifically trained in laparoscopic resection of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer, I perform the full range of colorectal operations, including reconstructive operations, such as ileal pouches. My clinical, research, and administrative efforts are all focused on implementing perioperative care practices that ensure best patient outcomes. Bridging specialties to best care for GI surgery patients, I particularly enjoy combined cases. For instance, I regularly operate with the pediatric surgery team on younger patients with IBD or pelvic cancer. Until my exposure to surgery in medical school, I thought I wanted the patient-doctor relationship well-known to primary care. With experience, however, I realized this relationship was possible in the practice of surgery. Colorectal surgery allows me the privilege of long-term relationships with a great variety of patients; close relationships with my colleagues; and administrative positions that promote the best care. I came to Duke from Nebraska, where I was a medical director for two weight loss surgery programs. I decided to become a weight loss surgeon because it gives me the chance to establish a long-term relationship with my patients. For many patients, weight loss surgery often feels like a fresh start, since they are able to get rid of some of the health problems they may have acquired due to their weight and do certain activities they couldn’t do before. I get a thrill out of being able help patients start this “new life.” My approach to care involves listening to what the patient wants out of the surgery, educating them about various treatment options and performing a full evaluation. Then, I work with the patient to come up with a treatment plan that meets their physical and mental health needs. Dr. Sudan is highly rated in 10 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Hernia, Obesity, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Gastric Bypass, and Gallbladder Removal.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon who is the chief of hand surgery at Duke. Although we are referred to as “hand surgeons,” I treat many people with wrist and elbow conditions. Because the hand is so complex, patients who see me can have complaints that range from numbness and weakness to issues with range of motion. My grandfather, my grandmother, my mother and my father were all health care workers. I have wanted to be a surgeon since I watched M*A*S*H on the television as a child. I obtain great satisfaction from treating someone who has a very severe hand or arm injury, reconstructing the part and restoring its basic function. Duke has been the strongest hand surgery program in the country for the past 50 to 75 years. As chair of the program, I want patients to know that the best and the brightest providers are seeing them when they come to Duke. Dr. Ruch is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Rhizarthrosis, Osteotomy, and Bone Graft.

The impact I have on my patients is what I enjoy most about being a weight loss surgeon. It is amazing that we can do an operation that not only helps a patient lose weight, but also fixes their diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with giving them a better quality of life. There are a lot of options these days for people who are considering weight loss surgery. It’s important for patients to take into account each institution and what resources they have available. Duke is fully equipped to take care of complex cases in a safe manner. We have a multi-institutional team that’s been around the Triangle the longest and has the most experience. Almost every patient comes back after surgery and we see some of their previous medical conditions go away. That’s a good definition of success. Dr. Portenier is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Obesity, Hernia, Short Bowel Syndrome, Gastric Bypass, and Sleeve Gastrectomy.

\I am a vascular surgeon with the training and experience to treat the full scope of vascular disease, however I do have a passion for preventing amputations. I have spent my career building both technical and academic expertise in the field of limb preservation for patients with diabetes and vascular disease (peripheral artery disease/PAD). My academic focus is on addressing health disparities related to amputation and working in underserved communities to achieve health equity through sustainable, community focused programs. Clinically, I have come to Duke to build a comprehensive multidisciplinary Threatened Limb Clinic. At our clinic, we work together with podiatry and wound care to closely care for our patient population and give them the ""\""TLC""\"" they deserve.""""https://www.dukehealth.org/sites/default/files/styles/doctor_profile/public/physician/samantha-d-minc-md-mph.jpg?itok=OxS6Ax1O Aetna | Ambetter | Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC | Cigna | Duke Group Plans | Experience Health | Gateway Health Alliance | Healthgram | Humana | MedCost | Medicare | NC Medicaid | TRICARE | United Healthcare active English no Duke Regional Vascular Access 407 Crutchfield St Durham NC 27704-2726 US https://www.dukehealth.org/find-doctors-physicians/samantha-d-minc-md-mph https://corporate.dukehealth.org/sites/default/files/2025-06/Duke%20Health%20Approved%20Logos_1.png. When should I see a General Surgeon near Hillsborough, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a General Surgeon near Hillsborough, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank General Surgeons near Hillsborough, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by General Surgeons near Hillsborough, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a General Surgeon in Hillsborough?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the General Surgeon search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different General Surgeon?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a General Surgeon near Hillsborough, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my General Surgeon?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my General Surgeon may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female General Surgeons near Hillsborough, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the General Surgeon search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

What are the most common health conditions that a General Surgeon near Hillsborough, NC might treat?

Can I filter my search to find a General Surgeon that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the General Surgeon search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
