I was born and raised right here in Durham, NC. After attending college at Duke, I ventured north to Boston, where I completed most of my medical training, and was fortunate to meet and marry the love of my life, my husband Neil (also on faculty as a cardiologist here at Duke). I returned to Durham for my Glaucoma fellowship, briefly joined the faculty “across the street” at UNC-Chapel Hill, and then returned “home” to Duke Eye Center in 1995, where I have been on the faculty ever since. Dual fellowship-trained in both Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus as well as in Glaucoma, I have a clinical and research focus on pediatric glaucoma and cataracts, as well as retinopathy of prematurity, but enjoy providing care for myriad pediatric problems of the eyes, including treatment of “grown children” with ocular alignment issues. My modus operandi is very simple – I simply try hard to treat each and every patient the way I would like someone to treat me. It works every time, and I am privileged to be a clinician and educator at Duke Eye Center and in Duke University Health System. Dr. Freedman is highly rated in 23 conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Retinopathy of Prematurity, Strabismus, Brown Syndrome, Trabeculectomy, and Cataract Removal. Dr. Freedman is board certified in American Board Of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology. Dr. Freedman is currently accepting new patients.

I’m a retina specialist who takes care of patients who have problems with the back of the eye. When a patient comes to see me, I like getting to know them and their history, so that I can tailor their treatment. My patients come from a variety of different backgrounds, so I find that I often learn as much from them as they do from me. Everybody has a different story and I very much like to learn about the patients to whom I provide care. Duke is a great place at which to work and from which to seek treatment because it’s a very collaborative institution. Everyone works together to do what’s best for the patient. Outside of work, I like to spend as much time as possible with my family. I also enjoy cooking, playing sports and watching sports. Dr. Jaffe is highly rated in 22 conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Late-Onset Retinal Degeneration, Geographic Atrophy, Vitrectomy, and Cataract Removal. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ocular tumors, including benign and malignant tumors of the eye. I have been working in this field for more than 20 years. Cancer of the eye is a rare disease, but once the tumor is found we begin the treatment process; the key is to be diagnosed and treated timely and correctly. My goal is to improve the prognosis of these rare eye diseases in terms of life, conservation of the eye and sight. There is a large team dedicated to ocular oncology at Duke Health. I work very closely with colleagues across Duke Eye Center and from Duke Cancer Center, specialists in children and adults, to develop the best diagnosis and treatment plans for patients suffering from cancer of the eye with the mission of providing optimal prognosis for life, eye and vision preservation. I am a native North Carolinian, having grown up in Raleigh, NC. I went to UNC-Chapel Hill for my undergraduate degree in Biology and attended Medical School there as well. I remained at UNC to complete my residency in Ophthalmology. I then came to the school with a deeper shade of blue to complete my fellowship year in Glaucoma and joined the faculty at the Duke Eye Center in July of 1996. I knew I wanted to be an eye doctor in 9th grade when I received my first pair of glasses. I could see clearly now, and I decided to dedicate my life to helping others improve and/or maintain their vision. My approach with patients is to put them at ease, as often they are concerned about going blind. I give them an opportunity to share with me their concerns, then I make recommendations based on the best available literature and my personal experience. I am an eye doctor who performs cornea transplants, Lasik eye surgery and takes care of patients with cataracts. I’ve been at Duke for over 12 years. I chose medicine because it allows me to apply science in a very effective, tangible way to improve people’s lives. When I see patients, my goal is to combine compassionate care with personalized attention. I also try to educate my patients so they can more easily understand and follow their treatment plan. I was inspired to become an eye doctor after having an experience teaching a man with vision impairment to ski again. I continue to obtain great fulfillment from helping patients improve their vision so they can see well and have the confidence to function again on a high level. In my free time, I play ice hockey and enjoy spending time with my family. Dr. Semchyshyn is highly rated in 5 conditions, according to our data. I’m a professor of ophthalmology and the division chief for cornea and refractive surgery. I find my work extremely rewarding. It’s a special experience and privilege to help give patients their vision back. Vision is so intricately related to one's quality of life. Many patients who come to the Duke Eye Center are concerned that they could be going blind, but they rarely ask that question directly. It is important that my patients clearly understand their eye disease process, the risks, benefits and all treatment options so that we can make joint decisions. I try to reassure, when possible, and share the positives, such as 'their eye condition may only affect one eye' or that 'it is possible to improve their vision or prevent further visual loss'. We also discuss how other health problems or lifestyle decisions can affect their visual health. When someone has a vision threatening condition, it is my goal to ensure that they know that, as their physician, I will advise them and guide them through their treatment and the often complicated medical system. I enjoy what I do every day as part of the Duke Health family!. Dr. Fekrat is highly rated in 16 conditions, according to our data. I am an ophthalmologist specializing in both pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology. My expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of neurological conditions affecting the eyes of both adults and children. My clinical interests include pediatric and adult nystagmus, strabismus, brain tumors, autoimmune demyelinating diseases, spina bifida, craniosynostoses, hydrocephalus, neonatal hypoxic ischemic injury, spina bifida, cortical visual impairment, papilledema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) and all optic neuropathies. The large majority of my patients are children with/or at risk for neurologic disease or adults with developmental delay. My clinic visits often include ancillary testing such as visual fields and optical coherence tomography, which help me assess if there is a risk for vision loss. I like to try to avoid invasive testing and procedures or testing that requires anesthesia or sedation when possible. In my pediatric clinic, I like to collect and use old fashioned mechanical toys to test eye movements, which younger children usually enjoy. I will often have small prizes for younger (and older) children at the end of the visit. Dr. El-Dairi is highly rated in 12 conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Papilledema, Increased Intracranial Pressure, Optic Nerve Atrophy, Strabismus, and Trabeculectomy. I feel very privileged to take care of patients at the Duke Eye Center. I believe that everyone deserves state-of-the art and compassionate eye care and strive to provide both to my patients. I particularly enjoy working with my patients to develop the plan of care that is tailored to their needs. Many of my patients have glaucoma or are at risk for glaucoma, although I also take care of people with general eye conditions such as cataract. My research focuses on helping patients with glaucoma self-manage their disease by improving patient educational materials, studying communication between patients and doctors, and developing a novel eyedrop bottle that helps patients instill their eyedrops correctly. My North Carolina roots run deep- originally from Charlotte, I am fortunate to have been educated both at UNC and Duke, my husband works at Duke and my three daughters were born in Duke Hospital. As a neuro-ophthalmology specialist, I am dedicated to providing high level care to patients suffering from conditions that affect neural pathways connecting the eyes and the brain, such as vision-threatening disorders of the optic nerve and double vision arising from diseases of cranial nerves or the orbit. Making a diagnosis often depends on piecing together clues from a thorough eye exam, ocular imaging studies performed in clinic, and neuro-imaging studies performed by Radiology. I enjoy the challenge of this specialty and providing individualized and multidisciplinary treatment strategies for my patients. In addition to my clinical work, I am involved in basic science research and clinical trials related to optic nerve disease, and I am passionate about translating new findings in the laboratory into ways to improve patient care. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, and following Duke basketball. Dr. Gospe-Iii is highly rated in 3 conditions, according to our data. I decided I wanted to be an ophthalmologist as a child when a pencil injured my eye at seven years old. Today I specialize in treating glaucoma and cataracts. I help diagnose patients and come up with a treatment plan. Glaucoma care is different because vision is lost slowly and silently. It’s really important for me to communicate to my patients what this condition is and how treatment works. I encourage patients to ask as many questions as they need to fully understand their condition. I try to be accessible to all my patients whether that’s via phone, email or in clinic. Even if it’s just that a prescription needs to be refilled, I make sure to be attentive to their needs. Dr. Hunter is highly rated in 3 conditions, according to our data. I am a glaucoma specialist and an experienced cataract surgeon. I also specialize in the combined surgical treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. I’ve been at Duke for over 10 years. I view patient care as a team effort between the doctor and the patient. However, in order for patients to do their part well and get the best outcome possible, they need to understand what’s going on with their eyes and their treatment. To help, when I meet with patients I try and speak in simple terms about their eyes and treatments. I grew up in New Mexico, which helps when meeting with Spanish-speaking patients. My pediatrician had a very kind and compassionate approach to care, which inspired me to become a doctor. I decided to pursue eye surgery with a focus on glaucoma, because it gave me the chance to get to know my patients and use cutting-edge technology to help make them better. I am an eye doctor whose practice and research focuses on glaucoma and the brain. As a doctor and a scientist, I am able to conduct my research and then use the findings to help others. When treating patients, my first step is to try and get to know them as a person. This includes learning their entire medical history, not just their eye trouble. This process can sometimes take many visits, since it requires obtaining records and conducting tests so we can obtain complete knowledge of the patient’s health. After I come up with a treatment plan, I feel that it is important to explain the plan to the patient and answer their questions. Many parts of my job are rewarding, but it is especially satisfying when I can make an impact in someone’s life by preventing vision loss or restoring their vision. I am a native of Ohio but a Blue Devil since I graduated college from Duke University. I returned to my Buckeye roots for my medical training but was happy to return to North Carolina and join the Duke Eye Center. My practice is a comprehensive ophthalmology practice and I welcome all patients that are looking for thorough, efficient and thoughtful care for acute eye problems and early management of chronic eye diseases. My particular interest is in Cataract surgery and aim to provide my patients with the most up-to-date advancements in the fast-growing field, including premium lens implants and laser-assisted cataract surgery. I understand that eyesight is so highly valued by most of us and therefore I do my best to inform patients of all of their options, whether surgical or medical, and to help patients make the best decision for their eyes. I am an ophthalmologist (eye MD) who specializes in treating patients with glaucoma. Often, my patients are referred to me by another doctor when their patient has a glaucoma. When I see a new patient, I try to answer three questions: Is it glaucoma? What type of glaucoma is it? What treatment would be best? I view my relationship with my patients as a partnership. Since glaucoma often does not have symptoms, the relationship requires trust. I am also interested in educating patients about their condition and how to take the best care of themselves. During my PhD research, I studied neurons in the eye called retinal ganglion cells. It turns out that these cells are the neurons that die in eyes of patients with glaucoma. After completing my PhD and finishing medical school, I chose to specialize in ophthalmology, specifically in glaucoma, with the hope of helping patients who struggle with the disease. What is an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating eye and vision problems. Ophthalmologists attend medical school and receive extra training in eye health and diseases. They can diagnose and treat serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and they can also perform eye surgeries. Some surgeries they might perform include removing cataracts, repairing retinal tears, and LASIK surgery to improve vision. In addition to medical treatments and surgeries, ophthalmologists can prescribe glasses and contact lenses. However, people usually see an ophthalmologist if they have complex eye issues that need special care.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist and an ophthalmologist both help people with their eye health, but their training and roles are different. Optometrists go to optometry school and mainly focus on vision exams, prescribing glasses or contact lenses, and spotting common eye issues. They provide regular eye care and can help with many vision problems. An ophthalmologist, on the other hand, is a medical doctor who can handle more serious eye diseases and perform eye surgeries. While an optometrist can help with basic vision care, an ophthalmologist is trained to treat complex eye conditions.

What tests does an ophthalmologist perform?

Ophthalmologists perform a variety of tests to check eye health and detect issues. Here are some common tests they might use:

    • Visual acuity test measures how well a person can see letters or symbols at different distances.
    • Tonometry tests check eye pressure to help detect glaucoma.
    • Dilated eye exam uses special drops to widen the pupils, allowing a clear view of the retina and optic nerve.
    • Optical coherence tomography takes detailed images of the retina’s layers to spot conditions like macular degeneration or diabetic eye disease.
    • Slit-lamp exam uses a bright light and microscope to examine the front part of the eye, including the cornea and lens.

What are the warning signs and symptoms of eye problems?

Eye problems can affect people differently and at different levels of intensity. Here are some common symptoms:

    • Blurry or double vision: Difficulty seeing clearly or seeing two images can indicate vision problems.
    • Floaters or flashes of light: Small specks or lines moving across your vision, or sudden flashes, may signal retinal issues.
    • Eye pain, redness, or swelling: These symptoms could mean an infection, injury, or other eye condition.
    • Sudden vision loss: Losing vision in one or both eyes suddenly is serious and requires immediate medical attention.
    • Dry or itchy eyes: This may be related to eye strain or irritation, but sometimes can be a sign of an underlying issue.
    • Frequent headaches: These may be linked to eye strain or vision changes.
    • Trouble seeing at night: Difficulty seeing in low light could indicate a developing eye condition.

Why am I being referred to an ophthalmologist?

A referral to an ophthalmologist usually comes from an optometrist, primary care doctor, or another healthcare provider if they see signs of a serious eye condition, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or high eye pressure, or if a complex eye problem needs more specialized care. You might also be referred to an ophthalmologist if you experience sudden vision loss, eye pain, or an eye injury. People with health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure might be referred to an ophthalmologist for extra monitoring to protect their eyes.

When should I see an Ophthalmologist near Camp Lejeune, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Ophthalmologist near Camp Lejeune, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Ophthalmologists near Camp Lejeune, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Ophthalmologists near Camp Lejeune, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Ophthalmologist in Camp Lejeune?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Ophthalmologist search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Ophthalmologist?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Ophthalmologist near Camp Lejeune, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Ophthalmologist?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Ophthalmologist may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Ophthalmologists near Camp Lejeune, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Ophthalmologist search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Ophthalmologist that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Ophthalmologist search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
