I originally moved to Michigan just before middle school and graduated from Pellston High School, a rural city in Northern Lower Michigan. I graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1986 and then spent 2 years studying Biochemistry at George Washington University in Washington, DC. I joined the U.S. Navy in conjunction with medical school and then spent 8 ½ years as a general pediatrician. While still in the Navy, I trained in Pediatric Cardiology and served as a staff Pediatric Cardiologist for another 8 ½ years at the San Diego Naval Hospital. Highlights of my Navy career also included a tour of duty overseas (Okinawa, Japan) and I was also attached as a medical officer taking care of active duty sailors while assigned to the U.S.S.
