Philosophy of care | The healing process requires trust, knowledge and hope. I try to create a feeling of trust, give patients the knowledge they need to understand their own condition, and of course, develop a plan that gives them hope. I treat my patients as if they are a member of my family or a close friend. I committed myself to that when I first thought of becoming a doctor. I know what it means. My dear aunt and grandmother both had breast cancer. I know how it affected my own family. Treating a patient like a member of the family means empowering my patients with understandable information and formulating a treatment plan that makes sense to them. I share my perspective with my patients, try to eliminate the unknown and help them to see the light after passing through darkness. | Also, I am a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | I was conflicted between my passion for classical music as a concert pianist and for the art of medicine as an intellectual. I came to a conclusion that I could combine both arts and make a compassionate career with the product of my hands - the art of Surgery. | Community involvement | I am committed to church activities, medical missions and mentorship. I am actively engaged in women's programs such as 'Show your chapeau', a fundraiser musical event to benefit breast cancer patients. | Personal interests | My interests are classical piano, church organ and oil painting. Philosophy of care | As a surgical oncologist, I’m passionate about beating cancer. We hope to eradicate it and do everything possible to maximize the patient’s quality of life. I talk to patients in a language they can understand. When I make a treatment recommendation, I put myself in their shoes and tell them what I would do if I were faced with these options. | Why I entered medicine | I think I was born to be a doctor. My father was a doctor, and I was fascinated with anatomy as a child. I had anatomy models and would constantly play with them. During my first surgical rotation in medical school, I was hooked. Surgery is anatomy. The intensity, teamwork and ability to fix problems in the operating room is what drives me. | Community involvement | I find it deeply gratifying to support organizations that inspire me. I’m a long-time donor to Semper Fi, a group that gives financial assistance and support to post-9/11 injured veterans and their families. I feel strongly about supporting our military service members who sacrifice so much to protect us. I’m also an enthusiastic backer of Yellowstone National Park. I went there as a kid and later took my own kids when they were young. I’ve always been in awe of Yellowstone’s majesty and beauty. | Personal interests | I enjoy spending time with my girls (my wife and three daughters) and my boys (my two dogs). LVH Surgical Oncology-Hecktown Oaks
Philosophy of care | I pride myself on taking care of people, not diseases or body parts. | People come with histories, belief systems, truths and misconceptions about their diagnoses based on their prior experiences and those of others. I try to understand and appreciate where they’re coming from and all aspects of their life when treating them. | A cancer diagnosis can be frightening, and I don’t take that lightly. Patients allow me into their lives at what may be the scariest time ever for them. I try to include the family in treatment because family is important and the diagnosis involves everybody, not just one person. | I’m a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together, we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | I was born and raised in Allentown, and Lehigh Valley Health Network has been part of my family as long as I can remember. | I grew up on the South Side of Allentown, not far from the LVH–Cedar Crest campus when it was a single building in what seemed the middle of a cornfield. My mother was treated for breast and lung cancer there. My father was treated for Legionnaire’s disease there. My brother was treated there for osteochondrosarcoma, a bone and cartilage cancer. I came from a family of blue-collar workers and nobody had been to college, but my family’s experience with cancer and disease inspired me to go to medical school and become a cancer surgeon. | Community involvement | I’m part of anything affiliated with breast cancer fundraising. I don’t belong to a lot of philanthropic organizations outside the hospital, but I participate in any activities the hospital sponsors, particularly when they’re related to breast cancer. | Personal interests | I collect shoes, and have for many years. Some are vintage or from notable designers who people might know from various TV shows, like Manolo Blahnik. I have a room in my home just for shoes, but they’re not strictly for display – I wear them every day. | As a woman in medicine who takes care of predominantly women, this is something fun I can share. In fact, I’ve become known for it, so new patients often look first at my feet to see what I’m wearing! I also enjoy Peloton, which is a type of stationary exercise bike with a large screen that allows you to connect with a community of users. It’s like a fitness Facebook except everybody doesn’t know all your business. My username is HellonHeelz. Dr. Alfonse is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Breast Cancer, Paget Disease of the Breast, Angiosarcoma, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, and Lymphadenectomy.

Patient-centered care is important to me and I make sure you fully understand your diagnosis and all treatment options. | Why I entered medicine | I’m a hands-on person, someone who’s interested in what makes things work. I’ve always been intrigued by the human body and how it works. | My interest in medicine was first sparked in my childhood. I was only 4 when my sister was born and had to be airlifted for emergency surgery. The operation was successful and I remember the surgeon being this larger than life figure to me. | I started out my college career majoring in pharmaceutical product development, but it soon became clear that the only place I would be happy was in medicine. | Personal interests | I’m the mother of two and love spending time with my children. MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.
What types of insurance are accepted by Surgical Oncologists in Pennsylvania, US?
Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.
How can I book an appointment online with a Surgical Oncologist in Pennsylvania?

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Surgical Oncologist?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:
- Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)

What questions should I ask my Surgical Oncologist?
Here are some sample questions:
- Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?

- Are there other specialists I need to see?
- What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?
How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Surgical Oncologist may know about?
MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.
MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
