Dr. Peter Rowe is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is the inaugural Sunshine Natural Wellbeing Foundation Professor of Chronic Fatigue and Related Disorders and serves as the Director of the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Related Disorders Program at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. His areas of clinical expertise include chronic fatigue syndrome and other disorders characterized by fatigue and orthostatic intolerance. Dr. Rowe and his colleagues were the first to describe the relationship between myalgic ecephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and treatable orthostatic intolerance syndromes, as well as the association between Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and ME/CFS. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, Dr. Rowe earned his medical degree at McMaster University Medical School in Ontario. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins and completed his fellowship in General Pediatric Academic Development. He was on the staff at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario from 1987-1991 before returning to Johns Hopkins in 1991. Dr. Rowe’s research focuses on the physiologic factors (circulatory dysregulation, allergic disorders, joint laxity, biomechanical strain, and neuroanatomic problems) that contribute to chronic fatigue as asymptom, and to ME/CFS and long COVID as conditions. In 2014, Dr. Rowe received the research award from the International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (IACFS/ME) for his clinical and scientific work on chronic fatigue syndrome and related disorders. He is a member of the research advisory council for Solve ME/CFS. He is also a member of the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, the Canadian Pediatric Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Rowe is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Dracopoulos & Daniel Finkelstein, M.D. Rising Professorship in Ophthalmology. His main focus is pediatric and juvenile forms of cataracts, glaucoma, anterior segment dysgenesis, and ectopia lentis. His genetics interests include Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders, complex inherited forms of strabismus in both children and adults (e.g. CFEOM, Duane syndrome), and pediatric retinal dystrophies. Dr. Doyle has published extensively on a number of genetic disorders over the past decade, holds several patents for novel therapeutic approaches to treat them, and has given many national and international talks about them. Dr. Doyle's main research focus is understanding the genetic causes and molecular mechanisms driving genetic diseases, and utilizing that knowledge to develop new therapeutic strategies for them. Over the past decade, he has played a significant role in advancing our understanding of Marfan syndrome and related connective tissue disorders. His work and that of collaborators has led to the discovery of the genetic causes of Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome and Loeys-Dietz like syndrome. His work has also led to a much better understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving Marfan syndrome, and he holds two patents for novel therapeutic strategies to treat it. Part of his current work focuses on the identification of genes that protect people from developing a number of genetic disorders, and leveraging that knowledge to develop new therapies for those diseases. He also has an interest in pediatric myopia, and has ongoing pre-clinical studies seeking to understand the mechanisms that may drive it and the development of novel therapeutic strategies to treat it. What is the definition of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of heritable disorders that affect connective tissues supporting the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other organs and tissues. Defects in connective tissues cause the signs and symptoms of these conditions, which range from mildly loose joints to life-threatening complications. The various forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have been classified in several different ways. Originally, 11 forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome were named using Roman numerals to indicate the types (type I, type II, and so on). In 1997, researchers proposed a simpler classification (the Villefranche nomenclature) that reduced the number of types to six and gave them descriptive names based on their major features. In 2017, the classification was updated to include rare forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that were identified more recently. The 2017 classification describes 13 types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Each type is distinct and has its own common symptoms. The combined prevalence of all types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome appears to be at least 1 in 5,000 individuals worldwide. The hypermobile and classical forms are most common; the hypermobile type may affect as many as 1 in 5,000 to 20,000 people, while the classical type probably occurs in 1 in 20,000 to 40,000 people. Other forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are rare, often with only a few cases or affected families described in the medical literature. The inheritance pattern of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes varies by type. The classical, vascular, arthrochalasia, and periodontal forms of the disorder, and likely the hypermobile type, have an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Autosomal dominant inheritance means that one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. In some cases, an affected person inherits the mutation from one affected parent. Other cases result from new (de novo) gene mutations and occur in people with no history of the disorder in their family. The classical-like, cardiac-valvular, dermatosparaxis, kyphoscoliotic, spondylodysplastic, and musculocontractural types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, as well as brittle cornea syndrome, are inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. In autosomal recessive inheritance, two copies of a gene in each cell are altered. Most often, the parents of an individual with an autosomal recessive disorder are carriers of one copy of the altered gene but do not show signs and symptoms of the disorder. The myopathic type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome can have either an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.

When should I see an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor near Baltimore, MD?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor near Baltimore, MD?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctors near Baltimore, MD?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctors near Baltimore, MD?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor near Baltimore, MD?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor near Baltimore, MD?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctors near Baltimore, MD?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
