I first recognized my passion for taking care of cancer patients during my internal medicine residency in the 1990s. At that time, new treatments were emerging and our understanding of this terrible and complicated disease was beginning to accelerate. I remember waking up each morning with new energy to get into the hospital to take care of my patients. Oncology embodied all of the reasons why I went into medicine; the compassion, the emotional connections, the incorporation of not just medicine, but psychological, emotional, and spiritual care. I enjoy getting to know my patients. I share in their joys and their challenges, and many almost become an extension of my family. In my time away from my patients, I enjoy spending time with my wife, four children and two dogs as well as oil painting, running, and cooking. Dr. Smith is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Colorectal Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Familial Colorectal Cancer, Hodgkin Lymphoma, and Paget Disease of the Breast.

I became a doctor because of my lifelong desire to help people. In fact, when asked as a young child to draw a picture of what I wanted to be when I grew up, I drew a picture of myself with a stethoscope. Gastroenterology appealed to me because it involves complaints that almost everyone experiences at some point, and helping people feel better is very gratifying. In my practice, I see adults with common digestive tract issues, including heartburn, abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, as well as a focus in seeing patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). I believe spending the time to get a detailed history from each patient is valuable, not only for diagnosing and successfully treating or managing these conditions but also for establishing an open, comfortable physician-patient relationship. Dr. Crocker is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Colorectal Cancer. I've been working in healthcare for over two decades, and what I like most about it is getting to know my patients well. When someone is told they have cancer, it's incredibly scary. But the good news is that there are better treatments now that can provide hope. My team and I make an effort to understand our patients, learn what's important to them, and support them through the challenging times. We use my knowledge and experience to lead a team of different experts who collaborate to try to cure cancer when possible and create treatment plans that align with the patient's preferences. I'm also well-versed in new and upcoming treatments due to my work in cancer research. I can explain them in simple terms so that everyone can understand, which helps patients feel more confident and engaged. I specialize in treating skin cancers like melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and cancers that arise in the gastrointestinal tract, including colon and rectum. Outside of work, I'm a family man with a loving wife and two kids. We thoroughly enjoy living in North Carolina, with its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities such as hiking and sports. I've had the privilege of helping many patients, and I look forward to being there for you too. As a medical oncologist and hematologist, I treat patients with common adult solid and hematologic cancers. My passion for cancer treatment is deeply rooted back to my childhood when I witnessed loved ones suffering from this devastating disease. As such, I share with patients and their families the feeling of desperation, pain and stress. In my view, cancer treatment is not only a medicine but also an art, as a physician needs to be sensitive to both the patient's physical, and emotional needs to keep their hope for getting better alive. I have particular interests in gastrointestinal malignancies, like esophageal, stomach, small bowel, colon, pancreatic, biliary and liver cancer. I provide my patients with evidence-based and the most advanced treatment options, including participating in clinical trial opportunities. I am a gastroenterologist and the medical director of the gastrointestinal (GI) program at Duke Raleigh Hospital. I enjoy being at Duke, because our team is one of the most experienced in the Southeastern United States. Most of the patients I see have diseases of the biliary or pancreatic systems including blockages. Some of these can be malignant. When I first meet a patient, I like to know their expectations for treatment. I also like to meet the patient’s loved ones and answer any questions they may have at the very first visit. After we talk, I review the patient’s x-rays and records. The next step is to discuss the results with my colleagues as a team, so we can come up with a unique treatment plan that is personalized for each patient. The most rewarding part of my job is the interaction with patients. If I can provide immediate help, I’m even happier. Dr. Obando is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Colorectal Cancer. My practice centers on the care of patients with digestive diseases. My particular area of interest and expertise is inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. I find my work with patients very rewarding since we now have many more treatment options for patients with IBD and there are more innovations on the horizon. For me, the most important aspect of being a physician is to develop an honest, trust-based relationship with patients which allows us to work together. I chose to become a surgical oncologist because of the unique opportunity for complex surgical care and longer-term follow-up. The interpersonal relationships with patients serve to motivate me as a physician. Recognizing how difficult it must be as a patient diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness, I strive to minimize the stress on patients and families. I do this by educating them about their diagnosis and potential treatments, enabling them to make key decisions in their care and closely caring for them for the duration of their recovery from surgery. I am humbled by the faith and confidence that patients place in their surgeons, and I strive to always exceed their expectations. Following 20 years of service on active duty in the Army, I am eager to join the team at Duke University Medical Center and provide the best possible care to our patients. What is the definition of Familial Colorectal Cancer?

Familial colon cancer is a cluster of colon cancer within a family. Most cases of colon cancer occur sporadically in people with little to no family history of the condition. Approximately 3-5% of colon cancer is considered "hereditary" and is thought to be caused by an inherited predisposition to colon cancer that is passed down through a family in an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive manner. In some of these families, the underlying genetic cause is not known; however, many of these cases are caused by changes in the APC, MYH, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, EPCAM, PTEN, STK11, SMAD4, BMPR1A, NTHL1, POLE, and POLD1 genes (which are associated with hereditary cancer syndromes). An additional 10-30% of people diagnosed with colon cancer have a significant family history of the condition but have no identifiable genetic change in a gene known to cause a hereditary predisposition to colon cancer. These clusters of colon cancer are likely due to a combination of gene(s) and other shared factors such as environment and lifestyle.

When should I see a Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor near Raleigh, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor near Raleigh, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Familial Colorectal Cancer doctors near Raleigh, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Familial Colorectal Cancer doctors near Raleigh, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor near Raleigh, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor near Raleigh, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Familial Colorectal Cancer doctors near Raleigh, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Familial Colorectal Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
