Dr. Alves is a native of Portugal and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. He moved to New Jersey at the age of 15, and soon after attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and two Masters degrees in Bio-mathematic Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.
