In this way, we can truly move forward with shared decision-making to achieve an optimal outcome. Educating the next generation of orthopedic surgeons is also a priority of mine; I am leading a team to build a new orthopedic residency training program here at LVHN. | Why I entered medicine | I still remember as a child accompanying my father (an orthopedic surgeon) on his patient rounds. I dreamed of one day helping patients return to the activities they loved just as did. I studied hard, became an EMT, volunteered at a firehouse, worked ski patrol in college and taught the winter care emergency course to my fellow patrollers. In medical school I found orthopedic surgery to be the most exciting path for me, and I have never looked back. I have found immense satisfaction over the years helping patients feel and function better, and am so gratified hearing I have changed their lives for the better. | Community involvement | As the father of two preemies (born 11 weeks early), my wife and I have supported research to investigate the causes of premature birth. We have been on the leadership team for the Philadelphia March of Dimes' annual March for Babies for several years. Why I entered medicine | I was 10 years old when I was diagnosed with a congenital abnormality of my right hip. At the time, I was an active athlete, and sports kept me focused. So, when I was told I would need two surgeries in two years and that I would be lucky to walk without a limp but likely not play sports again, I was devastated. I went for a second opinion, and when Dr. Tom Altizer told me not to worry, that I would be playing football in two years, I was hooked. Two years later, I was a triathlete and knew sports medicine orthopedics was my calling. From that point forward, everything I did in my personal sports career and schooling was to get me to sports medicine orthopedics -- almost to a fault, because while pursuing this dream I had a bit of tunnel vision to the other areas of medicine. Originally I was interested in sports medicine orthopedics as an academic rather than a surgeon, but a tragic accident in which I lost two close friends made me change my course. I landed in Orlando, Fla., where I started working with performance athletes and professional athletes.
