I love endocrinology because of the way it explores and explains the complex interactions between different organ systems in our body. I value the opportunity I get to connect with patients and develop long-lasting, trusting relationships with them. My highest priority is to listen to my patients and understand their questions and concerns, provide them with necessary information and tools, and then work together as a team to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment plan which is the most beneficial to them. I am also a member of the Endocrine Society. Outside of work, I enjoy listening to music and spending time with my husband and two daughters. Dr. Sharma is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Addison's Disease. I went into medicine because I enjoy helping people, teaching, and problem-solving. The endocrinology field allows me to fulfill my passion given I can help patients with many different complex chronic diseases. My clinical interests include diabetes, lipid disorders, and post-bariatric surgery endocrine disorders. I also have an interest in thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, and hyperparathyroidism. For patients with long-term complex or unstable endocrine conditions, I work with a team of providers, including endocrine-trained nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical pharmacists, to help manage your care. My interest in medicine began as a child. My father was a physician and my mother was a nurse, so I grew up having a working knowledge of medicine. When I went to college, I became an EMT and developed a true interest in medicine. I fell in love with endocrinology during my residency while working with a physician who became my mentor. I enjoyed every minute of endocrine clinic and caring for patients with diabetes. The best part about being an endocrinologist is the long-term relationships with patients. Since many conditions in endocrinology are chronic conditions, I get to know my patients very well and spend a lot of time teaching them about the benefits and side effects of the treatments that we pick. I find that the more that my patients know, the better they do. I have four children and enjoy playing soccer with them and being a soccer dad. As a child, I grew up in a family where antibiotics, patients, laboratory analyses, infection, treatment, were common and frequently used words. I learned them by asking what they meant every time I would hear a new one. I still vividly remember my father leaving the house every Monday morning carrying a few freshly ironed white coats. He taught me about the importance of his job, why people care for each other, the responsibilities and the satisfaction a physician has. I always knew that I would follow my father’s steps and see patients, listen to their concerns, and play an important part in their lives by trying to keep them healthy, and away from harm. Many nights I arrive home late from work. The balance between my private and my professional life is found in my family's support, and the satisfaction that I did the best I could for my patients. What is the definition of Addison's Disease?

Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough (or any) of the hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. These adrenal gland hormones are necessary for balancing water and energy in the body. Symptoms usually develop slowly over time, and may include fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and dark patches of skin. Sometimes symptoms occur suddenly causing a condition called acute adrenal failure, also known as an acute adrenal crisis. Symptoms of an acute adrenal crisis include sudden weakness, pain, and fainting. The most common cause of Addison's disease is an abnormal response of the body's immune system. Injury to the adrenal gland can also cause Addison's disease. Diagnosis is based on the the symptoms, blood and urine tests that evaluate adrenal function, and imaging studies.

When should I see an Addison's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Addison's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Addison's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Addison's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Addison's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Addison's Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Addison's Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Addison's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Addison's Disease doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Addison's Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Addison's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Addison's Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Addison's Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Addison's Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
