Dr. Gian Rossi is a pediatric neurologist at Nemours Children's Specialty Care, Lakeland. He helps children and teens with a wide range of neurological issues, including headaches, migraines and seizure disorders. Dr. Rossi is a published medical journal author, with scholarly articles on topics such as epilepsy and interruptions in circadian rhythms. I highly admire my father, a retired pediatric neurologist, who before his passing, allowed me to shadow him in clinic. Thereafter, in high school, I loved learning about the brain and its functioning in a psychology class. I majored in neuroscience in college and pursued a career in medicine. I enjoy working with children — they are fun, and you get to meet whole families sometimes, which is a privilege. I enjoy a balance of academic pursuits including teaching, research and staying up-to-date in pediatric neurology. Anything in the whole milieu of medical practice could spark an interest in me at any time, whether it be reading up on the latest potential neurologic complications of COVID-19, sports concussion and CTE, bioethics of gene therapy, complementary and alternative medicine therapies for neurologic symptoms/disorders — those are just a few topics I have delved into and enjoy talking about with anyone who is interested. Interests in my field include: Seizures Epilepsy Spina bifida  Developmental delays  Tourette syndrome  Headaches and migraines I try to take each individual patient I see, and get to the bottom of their disease process and this almost always involves mental, physical, and spiritual or emotional health and the complex interactions embedded there.  I am new to Lakeland, so I want to get to know our resources in town and team up with the community. Dr. Rossi is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood. He is also highly rated in 63 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Seizures, Stereotypic Movement Disorder, Spasmus Nutans, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Rossi is board certified in American Board Of Psychiatry & Neurology.

I double trained in my specialty, first in Poland and then in the United States. At Nemours I hope to expand my research and involve colleagues who are interested in rehabilitation for conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord. My board certification in pediatric rehabilitation is rare. There are fewer than 250 of us who are board-certified in the entire country. I was born in Poland at the tail end of the last polio epidemic. Children I grew up with were living with post-disease disabilities. When I was about 5 years old, I made up my mind that I would be a doctor who could help children and search for cures. Children are a joy to work with. They have phenomenal potential to bounce back if you give them a chance and the tools. I want to help every child that comes to me for care. My goal is to improve their quality of life to the highest degree possible. There is always a lot you can do to make a child’s life happier, no matter  where they’re starting from in their physical capabilities. Gaining function is like food: you need to eat every day to be nourished, and you must practice new skills every day to make meaningful progress with rehabilitation. I try to give families the tools and information they need to play and interact with their child in a purposeful way that reinforces the skills they're working on in therapy. I also try to make it fun so it will be easy to practice daily. Dr. Brandys is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood. She is also highly rated in 11 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Cerebral Palsy, Dopa-Responsive Dystonia, Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase (AADC) Deficiency, and Familial Paroxysmal Nonkinesigenic Dyskinesia. I’m proud to lead the pediatric neurology division at Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville, and have a focus on treating children with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. I’m also active in helping train new doctors in how to care for children with neurologic disorders through a fellowship program with Mayo Clinic Florida. My work is all about caring for children who have neurological disorders like epilepsy. I focus on making their lives – and their families’ lives – better, so they can enjoy being children and pursue their own dreams. I had the honor of helping a child with intractable epilepsy become seizure-free after complicated epilepsy surgery. Watching her play soccer for her school was a gift I’ll always remember. Our scientific knowledge is increasing all the time, and so is our ability to address complex neurological issues. I enjoy seeing children with neurological disorders smile and lead full lives. It’s a blessing to help care for them, and I find it personally rewarding. Dr. Sheth is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood. What is the definition of Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood?

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a neurological disorder that usually affects children before 18 months of age. Classic AHC causes recurrent episodes of paralysis (hemiplegia) that involve one or both sides of the body, multiple limbs, or a single limb. The paralysis may affect different parts of the body at different times and may be brief or last for several days. A characteristic feature of AHC is that symptoms disappear during sleep and return upon waking. Many affected children display some degree of developmental delay, abnormal eye (oculomotor) movements, uncontrolled limb movements (including ataxia, dystonia, and choreoathetosis) and seizures. The majority of cases of AHC are caused by a new change (called a pathogenic variant) in the ATP1A3 gene that is not inherited. Thus, most patients with AHC do not have a family history of the disorder. A small number of cases of AHC are caused by changes in the ATP1A2 gene. When this condition does run in families, it follows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.

When should I see an Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor in Florida, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor in Florida, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctors in Florida, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctors in Florida, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor in Florida, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor in Florida, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctors in Florida, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
