He performed research at the McKnight Brain Institute, where he studied three-dimensional reconstruction of viruses through X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. He wrote his thesis on the structure of ADV virus in mink for future gene and vaccine research. Dr. Krakower continued his education at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Long Island.
