My focus is on heart rhythm problems. As a doctor, I work with patients to come up with a treatment plan that helps manage their condition. This may involve a cardiac ablation procedure or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. As a researcher, I spend a good portion of my time looking at health disparities with the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for people of all races, genders and ages. I’ve been at Duke since 1999, when I started my residency. I decided to become a doctor because I had an interest in biology while I was in college. I chose cardiology because it is highly technical and gives me the chance to really get to know my patients over the course of treatment. Focusing on the heart also allows me to make a greater impact on health care, since heart disease is so common in the United States. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including my two young children. Dr. Thomas is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT). His top areas of expertise are Ventricular Fibrillation, Paroxysmal Ventricular Fibrillation, Ectopic Heartbeat, Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.

One of the main things I like about electrophysiology is fixing heart rhythm problems. I love it when patients are rid of a problem that they have had for a long time, and I can tell them they are cured. They can go do whatever they want and don’t have to worry about seeing a cardiologist again. A patient with a rapid heartbeat I’ve been seeing for about 10 years finally decided she wanted to have an ablation procedure. We talked about that a lot. She was very nervous. Finally, she decided to move ahead with the procedure. It only took about 90 minutes, and she was cured. She was very happy and couldn't believe that it was really gone. I practice exclusively at Triangle Heart Associates and Duke Regional Hospital, which provides easy and convenient access for patients. Dr. Donahue is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT). His top areas of expertise are Arrhythmias, Cardiomyopathy, Atrial Fibrillation, Pacemaker Implantation, and Cardiac Ablation.

I have been a heart rhythm specialist at Duke for more than 15 years. My favorite part of my job is helping people. One of the nice things about electrophysiology is that we have the opportunity to fix many patients’ heart rhythm disorders. We use technology and medicines to fix heart arrhythmias that weren’t available just 10 to 15 years ago. I think the combination of Duke’s excellent facilities, being able to use the best available equipment in the field, and the very talented people that work here is what makes Duke such a special place. I’ve always felt that it’s a great privilege to work at Duke and with the tools available at this institution. I am excited about electrophysiology because it gives me the opportunity to improve patients' quality of life and allows patients to live longer in many cases. I ultimately went to medical school because of a passion for helping people, lifelong learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with my patients. I strongly believe in patient engagement and patient-centered decision making. Therefore, I believe that it is important to spend time educating patients and discussing all available treatment options. I encourage patients and their family members to ask questions so that I can help them understand their health. I offer medical therapy and catheter ablation therapy to patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and ventricular tachycardia. I also place transvenous pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators. I also perform lead extractions. I have two children, and I enjoy cooking, as well as playing golf, tennis, and skiing. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and raised in Montpellier, France, I migrated to the United States to further my medical education. Prior to practicing as a physician assistant, I conducted cardiovascular disease research while conducting educational seminars about cardiovascular diseases and health disparities for the local African American community. Upon completion of my physician assistant studies, I practiced in the Duke Cardiac Electrophysiology Department for nearly 10 years before transitioning to the Perioperative Anesthesia and Surgical Screening Clinic where I am currently seeing patients. Regardless of which specialty I serve, patients have been and continue to be the highlights of days in the clinic. Interacting with my patients gives me a sense of purpose. Even when there are times with no definitive guaranteed outcome, being able to bring a glance of peace and safety to my patients while delivering excellent quality of care and education remains my ultimate goal. I am a cardiologist who has been at Duke for over 15 years. I grew up in North Carolina and am proud to call Durham home. My father was a physician and my mother was a nurse, so I always thought about going into medicine. Cardiology came most naturally to me during medical school. The best part of being a doctor is the feeling you get from having genuinely helped someone in a meaningful way. I enjoy practicing at Duke, because I get to work with a lot of smart people who are dedicated to helping patients. When patients have challenging issues, Duke is a great place to receive care because of the access we have to top-notch providers and resources. Cardio-oncology is a relatively new field that’s at the intersection of cardiology and oncology. It’s been emerging with the increased awareness of cardiovascular disease in patients who have either been treated for cancer or who are being treated with cancer agents that may potentially cause heart complications. When patients come in, I evaluate if they are at higher risk for developing heart disease or complications and intervene to help prevent any issues. By protecting the heart, it allows us to treat our patients’ cancers as aggressively as possible. I also like to educate patients. This is based on my own experience with physicians. Instructions didn’t resonate with me without an explanation. Understanding gave me more buy-in. Now, when I see patients, I try to spend as much time as possible explaining the issues and find that at times even illustrating with pictures can help make things clearer. I think it helps patients to understand what is going on and feel more invested in their care. His top areas of expertise are Cardiac Amyloidosis, Heart Failure, Primary Localized Cutaneous Amyloidosis, Cardiac Ablation, and Orchiectomy.

I see patients who have heart disease, and I work to prevent them from having any bad consequences of that disease. I also see patients who are having symptoms and do diagnostic work to see what cardiovascular condition they may have to explain their symptoms. I also take care of patients who either have known or suspected genetic cardiovascular disorders. Our genetics clinic is one of the only adult cardiovascular clinics in the Southeast. We take care of patients who have a variety of cardiovascular genetic disorders or who have strong family histories of heart disease and want to come in for testing. Duke has a strong collaborative approach to patient care. We provide excellent care for patients who need routine care for more common medical disorders, but we also provide a high level of subspecialty care for those who may have rarer disorders. My work is aimed at trying to understand how heart failure develops and how we can develop a new type of drug therapy for that condition. Heart failure happens to run in my family – I have a relative with the disease. In many ways, that has had an impact on what I’m doing. Duke provides a lot of cutting-edge care for people who suffer from congestive heart failure. We are a large transplant center and have expertise in the care of patients with advanced heart failure and for patients who need advanced therapies. We also have expertise in the research realm, which really provides a lot of insight into the care of patients. Duke is a world-class institution. I am a cardiologist. I see athletes across the wide spectrum of athletic abilities who are concerned about cardiac complications and how that may affect their training or athletic competing. Many athletes have heart disease, or are at risk for heart disease, and have problems such as arrhythmias or fainting spells. It is very gratifying to work with an athlete who has the same goals that I do for competition and fitness, and to help them realize that they can stay active in the midst of treating their condition. The sports clinic is a great example of why Duke is such a great place to come, because we have expertise in such a broad range of areas. If I need advice or support from another colleague, not only will I get guidance, but I can easily refer patients as necessary for further evaluation and management. When should I see an Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia (AVNRT) doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see

Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
