Duke Children's Health Center Plastic Surgery Clinic
I have loved children for as long as I can remember. I knew I wanted to work with them from the time I was about 12 years old, and have been living my dream for the past 15 years. I have also enjoyed every minute of being a mom to my two beautiful daughters, and now that I am back at Duke I am not just fortunate to be part of this awe inspiring organization, but I also get to be close to my family; an added blessing. My husband, children and I recently moved from Chicago, IL to beautiful North Carolina. I am now part of the amazingly talented Pediatric Plastic Surgery team, and am very much looking forward to establishing myself as a valuable provider and resource for our patients and their families. Ms. Fernandez is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Baller-Gerold Syndrome. Duke Children's Health Center Neurosurgery Clinic
Duke Children’s offers the full spectrum of services for children, and pediatric neurosurgery is very strong here. I have an excellent group of people working with me, and we really strive to take excellent care of these children and their families. We work hard to build up a trust, because this is a very stressful and strained time in people’s lives when their children are ill. We work to build that trust and to maintain it on a daily basis. The whole team works together for the good of the child and the family. My favorite part of my job is seeing children who came in with a very serious health issue – and after getting them through the surgery and recovery – when they come back to clinic and we see that they have returned to their normal lives, that they’re doing better, that they’re enjoying all the things kids should be enjoying and really getting on with their lives. It’s really rewarding to think I played a role in that child going on to have a healthy and productive life. As a plastic surgeon, I strive to take the very best care of my patients that is possible. My areas of clinical focus include cleft lip/palate; craniofacial disorders (such as plagiocephaly, craniosynostosis, and hemifacial microsomia); craniomaxillofacial trauma; ear anomalies (such as microtia); functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty; obstetrical brachial plexus palsy; and vascular anomalies (such as hemangioma and lymphatic or venous malformations). I feel honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of my patients, and I take this responsibility very seriously. Each patient’s particular situation is unique. Therefore, in consultation, we will discuss your concerns and agree upon a plan that will yield the best outcomes possible. Duke Eye Center
I am an ophthalmologist specializing in both pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology. My expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of neurological conditions affecting the eyes of both adults and children. My clinical interests include pediatric and adult nystagmus, strabismus, brain tumors, autoimmune demyelinating diseases, spina bifida, craniosynostoses, hydrocephalus, neonatal hypoxic ischemic injury, spina bifida, cortical visual impairment, papilledema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) and all optic neuropathies. The large majority of my patients are children with/or at risk for neurologic disease or adults with developmental delay. My clinic visits often include ancillary testing such as visual fields and optical coherence tomography, which help me assess if there is a risk for vision loss. I like to try to avoid invasive testing and procedures or testing that requires anesthesia or sedation when possible. In my pediatric clinic, I like to collect and use old fashioned mechanical toys to test eye movements, which younger children usually enjoy. I will often have small prizes for younger (and older) children at the end of the visit. Dr. El is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Baller-Gerold Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Papilledema, Increased Intracranial Pressure, Optic Nerve Atrophy, Strabismus, and Trabeculectomy.
Duke Aesthetic Center
I am fortunate to have a profession that allows me to apply my skills to help children and adults who have challenging problems. My areas of clinical focus include cleft lip and palate, craniofacial surgery, functional and cosmetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) for adolescents and adults, facial paralysis, vascular malformation, ear surgery, congenital hand abnormalities, and birth-related brachial plexus injury. Often, I am asked how I chose this profession. To me, plastic surgery combines technical challenge with creativity and problem solving. My patients' problems are usually apparent to others and create a layer of issues related to self-esteem. To a child born with a facial disfigurement, surgery provides a change that is needed to grow up and feel like any other kid. In consultation, my job is three-fold: to listen to concerns, to study problems, and to provide accurate, unbiased information about the possibilities. I am motivated only by my patients’ happiness. If I do not feel that surgery will realistically achieve my patients’ goals, I have no reason to recommend it. To a parent, there is no such thing as minor surgery. The same is true for adult patients who are making an important decision for themselves. Dr. Marcus is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Baller-Gerold Syndrome.
