The practice of urology involves trying to help patients with a variety of very personal issues that have a tremendous impact on quality of life. I enjoy seeing patients with a wide range of urologic problems, with a particular interest in bladder cancer and other urologic malignancies. In addition to the academic setting, I enjoy working in the VA system treating our nation's veterans. I have been involved in basic laboratory research and numerous clinical trials over the years with an interest in advancing urologic care beyond the currently available treatments. I have had an interest in global health for many years and enjoy international medical education and health care. I am a urologic oncologist focused on the treatment of patients with genitourinary cancers. My areas of expertise include complex open and robotic surgeries of the retroperitoneum and pelvis. Some of the procedures I perform include the removal of kidney tumors, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, removal of the bladder and prostate, and urinary reconstruction. I utilize nerve-sparing techniques, extraperitoneal and minimally invasive approaches to surgery, and enhanced recovery strategies when possible to help patients quickly resume their regular life. When we first meet, it is important to review test results together and consider all the options on the table, which may or may not include surgery. Patients who understand their diagnosis and the pros and cons of different treatment approaches are best able to pick the treatment option that fits their needs and goals. We will work together to achieve the best outcome possible and make completing treatment as easy as possible. Dr. Shah is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Bladder Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Bladder Cancer, Urothelial Cancer, Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer, Cystectomy, and Nephrectomy.

Every day, my goal is to take the best surgical care of my patients' kidney or prostate cancer by offering the most up-to-date minimally invasive surgical treatments, while making sure that their experiences and outcomes at Duke Health are top-notch! As we look at the scans together and discuss biopsy results, it is important to me that I spend all of the time that my patients and their families need to clearly understand their diagnosis as well as all treatment options, so that we can make joint decisions about next steps and their treatment plan. Many of my patients are referred from all over the country to seek highly specialized urology care, including nonsurgical focal cryotherapy for prostate cancer, robotic surgery for prostate cancer, or robotic surgical removal of their kidney tumor called a partial nephrectomy, among other treatments, with our multidisciplinary, collaborative team. I always reassure and share my positive outlook with my patients as we navigate the health system together. My patients know that, as their physician, I will be their champion and advise them and guide them through their treatment. We are in this together. I specialize in treating people with genitourinary (GU) cancers, such as bladder, prostate, testicular and kidney cancer. I don’t treat other types of cancer across the breadth of tumors like some oncologists in the community may, such as blood cancer, breast cancer or lung cancer. My focus has allowed me to gain deep expertise in GU cancers and to stay abreast of the newest treatment advances, clinical research and so on for those specific GU cancers. As a medical oncologist, I meet patients at one of the scariest moments of their lives. I try to help educate them to make a decision about their disease and its process, and what their treatment options may be, so we can come to a shared decision about what might be the best option. The teaching aspect really strikes home for me. Both of my parents are teachers. The root word for “doctor” in Latin means “to teach.” So that is something I’m both naturally called to do and enjoy doing. Dr. Harrison is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Bladder Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Prostate Cancer, Familial Prostate Cancer, WT1-Related Wilms Tumor Syndromes, and Prostatectomy.

I specialize in the care of patients with urologic cancers – mainly prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and testicular cancer. A cancer diagnosis is one of the scariest things that can happen to someone. For many of our patients, they don’t necessarily feel different or look different, but they are scared to death. The most important thing you can get from Duke is real understanding of your particular case and what your options are. Knowledge is so reassuring and empowering for patients, especially those recently diagnosed with cancer. When you’re first diagnosed, you have to put your trust in a care team, and that’s hard to do if you don’t already know them. As the largest cancer center in North Carolina, Duke has great reputation and experience, which helps many patients chose Duke for their care. But we grow and develop our trust with patients because of who we are as people and how much expertise and care we bring to each case. Dr. George is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Bladder Cancer. I’m a reconstructive urologic surgeon who also cares for cancer survivors. Cancer survivorship care focuses on providing patients and families relief from the symptoms, pain and distress that may develop after and during cancer therapy. I find it gratifying to help a patient that has a significant problem and increase their quality of life. I decided I wanted to go into medicine while in high school after feeling a sense of duty to serve those around me; this was the same calling that drew me to service in the military for 23 years. I came to Duke after my active duty service in the Army was completed in 2010 and since then, my family has really become a “Duke family.” We regularly attend Duke Football games and other sporting and social events. My wife also works here, my kids have expressed interest in attending college here and we all regularly wear the Duke blue colors on weekends. As a urologist in Duke’s comprehensive kidney stone center, I focus on preventing and treating kidney stones using lifestyle changes, medicine and surgery. I see patients who have blood in their urine, problems with urination, as well as kidney stone pain and prevention. I went into urology because it’s a unique field where you can treat a problem with both medicine and surgery. My favorite part of my job is when someone comes in with pain and we are able to help relieve that pain and hopefully prevent it from returning. My hobbies outside of work include keeping up with my young daughter and spending time outside. Dr. Scales is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Bladder Cancer. What is the definition of Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer is a malignancy of the organ in the lower abdomen that stores urine and is the sixth most common cancer in the U.S. Bladder cancer frequently starts in the cells lining the bladder (urothelial cells); however, it can also occur in other types of bladder cells as well as include more than one type of cell. Three types of bladder cancer that begin in the cells lining the bladder (urothelial cells) are 1) urothelial carcinoma, which is also called transitional cell carcinoma; 2) squamous cell carcinoma; and 3) adenocarcinoma. Urothelial carcinoma (Transitional cell carcinoma) – Urothelial carcinoma, which is the most common type of bladder cancer in the U.S., is found in the cells lining the inside of the bladder (urothelial), which expand when the bladder is full and contract when it is empty. Squamous cell carcinoma – Squamous cell carcinoma can occur from chronic bladder irritation, such as frequent bladder infections or long-term catheterization. While rare in the U.S., this cancer is common in other countries where parasite infections called schistosomiasis cause frequent bladder infections. Adenocarcinoma – Adenocarcinoma occurs in the glands of the bladder that secrete mucus and is rare in the U.S. Bladder cancer is further classified as either non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) or muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) – Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is the most common type of bladder cancer, and usually does not spread (metastasize); however, it frequently recurs after treatment. Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) – Muscle-invasive bladder cancer spreads to the muscle wall of the bladder and can be life-threatening. Bladder cancer is also categorized by the following stages: Stage 0 (0a and Ois) – Non-invasive papillary carcinoma or carcinoma in situ, with abnormal cells that may become cancerous and spread (metastasize). Stage I – Cancer has spread to the connective beyond the inner lining of the bladder (urothelial cells). Stage II – Cancer has spread to the muscle layers of the bladder. Stage III (IIIA and IIIB) – Cancer has spread to the fat outside the bladder, and possibly the reproductive organs, such as uterus, vagina, prostate, or seminal vesicles; or cancer has spread to one pelvic lymph node. Stage IV (IVA an IVB) – Cancer has spread from bladder to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) or pelvis; or cancer has spread to lymph nodes above common iliac arteries. Cancer has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body, such as liver, lung, and bone. Bladder cancers are further categorized based on the appearance of cells, as either a low-grade bladder tumor or high-grade bladder tumor. Low-grade bladder tumor – Low-grade bladder tumor has cells that look more like normal cells, grows slowly, and is usually non-invasive (does not spread). High-grade bladder tumor – High-grade bladder tumor has cells that look abnormal, is more aggressive, and is usually invasive (spreads). The stage and grade of bladder cancer determines its treatment and outcome (prognosis).

When should I see a Bladder Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Bladder Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Bladder Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Bladder Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Bladder Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Bladder Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Bladder Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Bladder Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Bladder Cancer doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Bladder Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Bladder Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?
