Ever since I was an undergraduate at Duke, I have been interested in women's lives, and specifically how reproductive health plays a central role in a woman's quality of life. I am passionate about providing high quality and patient-centered care to women at all stages of their lives. I strive to work with women to make health care decisions that will be best for them. My clinical specialty areas are cervical cancer prevention, management of vulvar, vaginal and cervical pre-cancers, family planning, but I have experience with all aspects of gynecologic care. I left Durham after college to train in New York and then San Francisco. My family and I moved back to the area in September 2016, and we are excited to rejoin the Duke community.  I am excited to show my two children all of the parts of North Carolina that have made it so special to me. I see patients with all gynecological concerns. I have a particular interest and clinical focus on the management of patients with pelvic pain, including diagnoses of endometriosis, adenomyosis, nerve entrapment, vaginismus, vulvodynia, pelvic floor dysfunction, painful intercourse, fibroids, and cysts. My practice and research focuses on patients who have female-specific cancers, such as ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer. My dad was a physician, and my mom was a nurse, so I was exposed to health care at an early age. I am a gynecologic oncologist at Duke. I see women who have ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. I also see women with precancerous conditions of the gynecologic organs, which includes cervical dysplasia, vaginal dysplasia, and masses of the ovary that may or may not be cancer. I am fairly direct and let people know what they are dealing with up front. On the other hand, I try to keep everything positive. At this point in my career, I’ve had a lot of experience and will let patients know that while there’s a full range of outcomes that could happen, I have seen a lot of positive examples based on their condition. Surgery and management of patients with cancer is very complex and challenging. I enjoy working at Duke because of the breadth and quality of people we have here. I really feel like I’m working with the best when I’m working with my colleagues. I went into obstetrics and gynecology, because I enjoyed working with women patients. Then as a resident, I found that oncology patients were among the most gratifying to take care of because they appreciate so much everything you try to do for them. In high school and college, I was very interested in science and mathematics, and the human body and physiology. In college, meeting different types of people, I realized that I wanted a profession that gave me the opportunity to interact with all different kinds of people. I am passionate about offering patients with gynecologic cancer the most cutting-edge surgery and medical therapies. My research and clinical endeavors have focused on the development of novel surgical interventions, robotic surgery and the incorporation of technology to improve cancer outcomes, minimize the recovery from surgery, and decrease complications and side effects. I treat patients with all forms of gynecologic cancers and also offer surgery for complex benign gynecologic conditions. I derive great pleasure from establishing long-term relationships with patients throughout their cancer journey. When not at work, I enjoy cooking, running with my dog, Lucy, and spending time with my husband and sons. I decided at a very young age that I wanted to become an obstetrician. I was 7 when I watched my own mother go through pregnancy and became fascinated with pregnancy and birth. I started telling everyone “I’m going to deliver babies when I grow up.” As I went through medical school, my draw to the specialty confirmed what I'd felt from a very young age. One of the many reasons I love working at Duke is we are always well-equipped to deal with any emergencies which can arise unexpectedly. While most deliveries do not require any interventions, I am happy we can offer anything needed on a moment’s notice. In addition to taking care of pregnant patients, I enjoy taking care of adolescent women who are transitioning into adulthood. I also enjoy caring for perimenopausal patients and menopausal patients. I am happy to offer in office procedures, such as essure tubal ligation, which is a great option for women whom have completed childbearing. In addition, I enjoy surgical procedures in the operating room when surgery is required to treat an issue that cannot be managed with medication.
