Ever since I was an undergraduate at Duke, I have been interested in women's lives, and specifically how reproductive health plays a central role in a woman's quality of life. I am passionate about providing high quality and patient-centered care to women at all stages of their lives. I strive to work with women to make health care decisions that will be best for them. My clinical specialty areas are cervical cancer prevention, management of vulvar, vaginal and cervical pre-cancers, family planning, but I have experience with all aspects of gynecologic care. I left Durham after college to train in New York and then San Francisco. My family and I moved back to the area in September 2016, and we are excited to rejoin the Duke community.  I am excited to show my two children all of the parts of North Carolina that have made it so special to me. My practice and research focuses on patients who have female-specific cancers, such as ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer. I offer my patients access to variety of treatments, ranging from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation. My dad was a physician, and my mom was a nurse, so I was exposed to health care at an early age. I enjoy my work on female cancers, because it is one of the few subspecialties to blend surgery and chemotherapy. It also gives me the chance to develop strong relationships with my patients, since I get to take care of my patients before and during their surgery, as well as continue to see them for the rest of their lifetime. I’ve found those patients, who have been able to face their diagnosis with unwavering optimism, to be incredibly inspiring. I have three children, so outside of work I spend as much time as I can with my family. Dr. Alvarez is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cervical Dysplasia. I am a gynecologic oncologist at Duke. I see women who have ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. I also see women with precancerous conditions of the gynecologic organs, which includes cervical dysplasia, vaginal dysplasia, and masses of the ovary that may or may not be cancer. I am fairly direct and let people know what they are dealing with up front. On the other hand, I try to keep everything positive. At this point in my career, I’ve had a lot of experience and will let patients know that while there’s a full range of outcomes that could happen, I have seen a lot of positive examples based on their condition. If I had cancer or a family member of mine had cancer, I would absolutely want them to come to Duke. It’s not just the standard treatments that we offer here, but also the attention to detail and access to world-class clinical trials. Dr. Havrilesky is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cervical Dysplasia. Her top areas of expertise are Endometrial Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor, Hysterectomy, and Oophorectomy.

Surgery and management of patients with cancer is very complex and challenging. I enjoy working at Duke because of the breadth and quality of people we have here. I really feel like I’m working with the best when I’m working with my colleagues. I went into obstetrics and gynecology, because I enjoyed working with women patients. Then as a resident, I found that oncology patients were among the most gratifying to take care of because they appreciate so much everything you try to do for them. In high school and college, I was very interested in science and mathematics, and the human body and physiology. In college, meeting different types of people, I realized that I wanted a profession that gave me the opportunity to interact with all different kinds of people. My wife and I moved here 25 years ago and have never regretted it. It’s a great area to live. Dr. Berchuck is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cervical Dysplasia. I decided at a very young age that I wanted to become an obstetrician. I was 7 when I watched my own mother go through pregnancy and became fascinated with pregnancy and birth. I started telling everyone “I’m going to deliver babies when I grow up.” As I went through medical school, my draw to the specialty confirmed what I'd felt from a very young age. One of the many reasons I love working at Duke is we are always well-equipped to deal with any emergencies which can arise unexpectedly. While most deliveries do not require any interventions, I am happy we can offer anything needed on a moment’s notice. In addition to taking care of pregnant patients, I enjoy taking care of adolescent women who are transitioning into adulthood. I also enjoy caring for perimenopausal patients and menopausal patients. I am happy to offer in office procedures, such as essure tubal ligation, which is a great option for women whom have completed childbearing. In addition, I enjoy surgical procedures in the operating room when surgery is required to treat an issue that cannot be managed with medication. I am an obstetrician and gynecologist. I mostly see patients along with OB-GYN residents, in my role as an educator. We see patients in the benign gynecology clinic in Duke Clinic and we also see patients offsite, mostly in area health departments. A lot of times we take care of women who don’t have a lot of resources or who have already exhausted resources and they are coming to Duke because we are their only option. As an OB-GYN doctor, you’re catching a woman sometimes at the happiest times of her life and sometimes at the saddest times of her life. I think it’s very important to have an environment where she doesn’t feel judged, and where she feels comfortable sharing any information that you can use to help her feel better and to empower her to seek the care that she needs and do what she can do to contribute to the betterment of her health. Dr. Muasher is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Cervical Dysplasia. I was drawn to the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology because I saw from an early age how empowering a positive physician-patient relationship was for women of all ages. The impact of an open and trusting physician-patient relationship is immeasurable. I strive to provide my patients the care and experience that they deserve by first just listening. Listening to a patient's concerns, thoughts, and fears allows me to tailor my care to the individual and her specific needs. Whether I am providing obstetrical care, preventative and problem based gynecologic care, solutions for chronic and acute pelvic pain, or having discussions regarding advanced surgical interventions, the most important element is putting my patient's needs first. I am fortunate that I can form life-long relationships with patients from adolesence through menopause, and help them navigate their journey by being supportive and keeping them in good health. Being an Obstetrician/Gynecologist is extremely rewarding for all these reasons, but there is nothing more gratifying than helping a patient achieve her goals by preserving her health and well-being. What is the definition of Cervical Dysplasia?

Cervical dysplasia refers to abnormal changes in the cells on the surface of the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus (womb) that opens at the top of the vagina.

The changes are not cancer, but they can lead to cancer of the cervix if not treated.

When should I see a Cervical Dysplasia doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Cervical Dysplasia doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Cervical Dysplasia doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Cervical Dysplasia doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Cervical Dysplasia doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Cervical Dysplasia doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Cervical Dysplasia doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Cervical Dysplasia doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Cervical Dysplasia doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Cervical Dysplasia doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Cervical Dysplasia doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Cervical Dysplasia doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Cervical Dysplasia doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Cervical Dysplasia doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
