As a medical and surgical dermatologist, I have over 45 years of experience in helping patients maintain healthy skin. I have special expertise in managing patients with many moles and in the early detection and treatment of skin cancers, such as basal and squamous cell cancers as well as melanoma. To this end, I use a technique called dermoscopy in which a hand-held, illuminated magnifier is used to analyze moles and other skin lesions to help make a diagnosis and to decide if a biopsy might be needed or not. Prior to moving to North Carolina in 2016 to be closer to family, I ran a private dermatology practice in Boca Raton, Florida, which I started in 1979. I was also an affiliate professor in the dermatology department at the University of Miami, where I practiced pediatric dermatology and also ran the pigmented lesion clinic for many years. My focus is on medical dermatology, particularly patients who are immunocompromised. My clinical career in Dermatology has focused on dermatologic problems in HIV+ patients and solid organ transplant recipients, as well as patients who are immunocompromised for other medical conditions. I established the Duke Dermatology Transplant Clinic with the goal to provide early identification and prompt treatment of skin cancers in SOTRs by providing easy access, assessment of risk, patient education, early biopsy, field therapy for pre-cancers, medical therapeutic modification of risks if possible, and coordinated care with surgery, oncology or radiation therapy when indicated. In September 2022, I retired from the Duke Outpatient clinical service and now serve as an attending physician at the Durham VA Health System. I continue to provide Inpatient Dermatology for the Duke Health system as member of the consult team addressing the specialized multidisciplinary care of hospitalized patients with skin disease.
