What makes Duke Health unique in bone marrow transplants is its holistic approach. We take care of the disease -- which is important, because these are very serious, potentially fatal diseases. But at the same time, we pay attention to patients’ emotional and psychological well-being in addition to their physical well-being. And not only for patients but also the whole family, because the caregivers and other parts of the family need attention as well. I wanted to go into medicine, because it was a great way to interact and take care of patients. In my mind, cancer is one of two diseases within internal medicine where you can actually cure people. The best part of bone marrow transplant is that the time between the laboratory and the patient is short. Patients who need a transplant tend to be relatively sick and in need of new therapies. That’s been very intellectually challenging and fun. Dr. Chao is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD). His top areas of expertise are Graft Versus Host Disease (GvHD), Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD), Multiple Myeloma, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Bone Graft.

I am a doctor and researcher who specializes in bone marrow transplants. Patients usually come to me after their cancer treatment has been unsuccessful or when their disease is high-risk and may require further care. When I first see a patient, it is important for me to hear their story, the history of their condition and their treatment goals. This information is important so we can decide, together, which treatments to pursue and to what degree. For me, it is a privilege to get to know where people come from and to help families through their difficult time. I grew up working in a restaurant, so I was exposed to serving the public at an early age. As I became educated, I decided that I wanted to help others in a different capacity, so I pursued medicine. Outside of work, I like spending time enjoying nature and the beauty of North Carolina with my children and husband. Dr. Sarantopoulos is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD). Her top areas of expertise are Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD), Graft Versus Host Disease (GvHD), Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), Chronic B-Cell Leukemia (CBCL), and Bone Marrow Transplant.

Since studying basic immunology prior to beginning my clinical training, I have been deeply interested in applying immunological perspective for the treatment of cancers including hematologic malignancies. Interestingly emerging immunotherapies showed very promising results in recent years. In my clinic, I treat patients with multiple myeloma which is one type of cancer arising from plasma cells. My research will focus on developing early phase clinical protocols utilizing novel cellular therapy approach and also improving the outcomes of blood and marrow transplantation. My ultimate goal is to provide better treatment options than the current standard approach to patients. It has been my privilege to care for lung transplant patients for over 20 years. I have found that helping patients and their loved ones along their transplant journey to be very rewarding. My job as the Medical Director of the Duke Lung Transplant Program is to help equip our team to work collectively to achieve the best outcome for our patients. Our mission is to serve patients and the transplant community with a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary team approach to create a pathway to transplant, particularly for those facing barriers from medical co-morbidities. This requires a commitment to communicate and collaborate across all disciplines in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. We want to make the patient experience the best it can possibly be. We also recognize that in order to improve outcomes in lung transplants, there must be significant advances in the prevention and treatment of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). Therefore, we support clinical research efforts to this end, participate in the most promising trials, and provide our patients the opportunity to enroll in them. Ever since I was an undergraduate at Duke, I have been interested in women's lives, and specifically how reproductive health plays a central role in a woman's quality of life. I am passionate about providing high quality and patient-centered care to women at all stages of their lives. I strive to work with women to make health care decisions that will be best for them. My clinical specialty areas are cervical cancer prevention, management of vulvar, vaginal and cervical pre-cancers, family planning, but I have experience with all aspects of gynecologic care. I left Durham after college to train in New York and then San Francisco. My family and I moved back to the area in September 2016, and we are excited to rejoin the Duke community.  I am excited to show my two children all of the parts of North Carolina that have made it so special to me. I’m a pediatric blood and bone marrow transplant specialist. I see patients from all over the world, many of whom have very rare diseases. I take care of patients with leukodystrophies, leukemias and other blood disorders that are resistant to standard treatment, and children with brain injuries like cerebral palsy. It’s rewarding to make a difference when treating challenging diseases. I’ve been fortunate over my career to be able to develop new treatments in the laboratory that I take into the clinic to help patients. In fact, here at Duke I was involved in the first cord-blood transplant anywhere in the world. When meeting with patients, I focus on making their experience more than just the medicine. We have a family support program for things beyond medical needs, which is especially helpful for families that are far from home. Outside of work, I like to knit, bike and spend time with my family. The Division of Cellular Therapy does bone marrow transplants and stem cell transplants for patients with different types of blood cancers. Specifically, I see patients with multiple myeloma or other plasma cell issues like amyloidosis. Many of the cases in my clinic are difficult. So I spend a lot of time talking with my patients, explaining the disease when they come as new patients and talking about the complexity of the disease, because it’s important that they understand what to ask their physicians here at Duke and at home. There’s no standard treatment for myeloma. We have different options – continuation of therapy, immediate transplant or transplant later. I like to explain to patients why I favor a certain treatment approach and why I think it would be the best approach for them. "My career in oncology has spanned 30 years. Over that course of time, I have been witness to amazing advances in cancer care. My father died of leukemia when I was 11 years old. This experience shaped my life and drew me to oncology nursing. My path has been filled with varied oncology experiences, including direct patient care and clinical research. I work with an amazing team of expert clinicians that understand how the marriage of scientific curiosity and human compassion allows us to continually improve cancer care, every day with every patient. Gratitude is a gift cultivated in oncology. Patients teach us not only to live but how to have a life. Gratitude for some of my favorite things includes: the smell of rain, being mindful of the space my body occupies, shenanigans with my nieces and nephews, my dog's loving gaze, the challenge of hiking & backpacking that feeds my senses. A wise patient once told me that it is better to ""to do"" things than to ""have"" things because you never have to dust off your memories.". I was introduced to the world of oncology during my undergraduate nursing summer internship at New Hanover Hospital. After caring for these patients, I knew this population was the one I was meant to serve. Since then, I spent a short period of time working as a bedside nurse in GYN/Oncology at Duke Health before starting in the adult bone marrow transplant in 2007. Since 2007, I have worked in both the inpatient and outpatient side of adult bone marrow transplant and have worked as both a bedside nurse and currently as a nurse practitioner. I feel honored to work with such wonderful staff and patients. Ms. King is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD). I focus on treating patients with blood cancers who are considering stem cell or bone marrow transplantation. There have been significant improvements in transplantation over the last 20 years, which has improved outcomes. These improvements include the ability to use lower doses of chemotherapy to reduce toxicity for patients, as well as strategies to reduce the risk of relapse. I am interested in using new therapies and approaches to improve outcomes after stem cell transplantation for blood cancers. It is important to work together with patients to determine their goals for treatment and select the best path forward. I have enjoyed working with patients and their families for many years after their transplant. When should I see a Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD) doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD) doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD) doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
