What makes Duke Health unique in bone marrow transplants is its holistic approach. We take care of the disease -- which is important, because these are very serious, potentially fatal diseases. But at the same time, we pay attention to patients’ emotional and psychological well-being in addition to their physical well-being. And not only for patients but also the whole family, because the caregivers and other parts of the family need attention as well. I wanted to go into medicine, because it was a great way to interact and take care of patients. In my mind, cancer is one of two diseases within internal medicine where you can actually cure people. The best part of bone marrow transplant is that the time between the laboratory and the patient is short. Patients who need a transplant tend to be relatively sick and in need of new therapies. That’s been very intellectually challenging and fun. Dr. Chao is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). He is also highly rated in 35 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Graft Versus Host Disease (GvHD), Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGvHD), Multiple Myeloma, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Bone Graft. Dr. Chao is board certified in American Board Of Internal Med, Internal Medicine and American Board Of Internal Med, Medical Oncology.

People in need of a bone marrow transplantation can often be scared or intimidated by what is ahead of them -- my goal, when seeing a new patient, is to devote all the time and effort that is needed to address these emotions. My hope is that after this visit, my patient will feel reassured and hopeful that the Duke team of providers will do all that it can to restore them to health, and allow them to return to their lives. What is the definition of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)?

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a slow-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow which produces high levels of abnormal white blood cells (lymphocytes). Unlike normal cells, the abnormal white blood cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia do not fight infection properly and crowd out red blood cells and platelets, which may result in anemia, infections, and bleeding. While chronic lymphocytic leukemia starts in the bone marrow, over time the disease spreads through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, especially the lymph nodes, as well as the liver and spleen, which then become enlarged. There are two main types of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, one that progresses very slowly (B cell), and one that progresses more quickly (T cell), which is the more serious type. Diagnostic tests can determine if chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the type that progresses slowly by finding the proteins, ZAP-70 and CD38, on the leukemia cells, which can predict a better long-term outcome. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common type of leukemia in adults, and more often affects individuals who are white, middle-aged, or older, usually over the age of 70, while occurring very rarely in children. In general, chronic lymphocytic leukemia is categorized as asymptomatic (without symptoms), symptomatic, progressive, refractory (resistant to treatment), or recurrent. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is further categorized by the following stages: Stage 0 – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), without any sign or symptom of leukemia. This is a slow-growing stage. Stage I – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes) and enlarged lymph nodes. Stage II – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. Stage III – Too many white blood cells (lymphocytes), and not enough red blood cells, enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. Stage IV – Too many white blood cells, and not enough platelets or red blood cells, enlarged liver, spleen, or lymph nodes. The stage of chronic lymphocytic leukemia helps to determine the treatment and outcome (prognosis).

When should I see a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Hickory, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Hickory, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Hickory, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Hickory, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Hickory, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor near Hickory, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctors near Hickory, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
