Duke Endoscopy Clinic - Clinic 2H
I specialize in performing advanced luminal endoscopic procedures, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of certain disorders of the esophagus and stomach, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), mucosal resection (EMR), full thickness resection (EFTR), and endoscopic suturing for the removal of lesions from the GI tract, as well as transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). It is important to me that my patients understand that they are part of the team when it comes to taking care of their gastrointestinal conditions. I will help them make the best decisions, but will not push them to do anything with which they are uncomfortable. Therefore, it is also very important to me that my patients feel well-educated about their gastrointestinal condition so that they can help make the decisions that are best for them. I am originally from Apex, North Carolina, and after many years away, I am excited to be back in the Triangle taking care of the community that raised me. Duke Endoscopy Clinic - Clinic 2H
I am thrilled to return to Duke Health after my recent retirement to provide much-needed part-time endoscopy services and improve access to colon cancer screening and surveillance. I first came to Duke from Kansas in 1989 and loved the pine trees and people so much that I never went back. I was the first female gastroenterologist (and 20 weeks pregnant) when I started private practice in Raleigh in 1994. After nearly 30 years of uninterrupted service to my beloved patients in central North Carolina, I retired in January 2024. It was difficult to give up my passion for gastroenterology, colonoscopy, and patient interaction. I am eager to return with a schedule that allows me to travel more with my husband. I enjoy meeting patients and easing their anxiety through rapport and detailed explanations. A little humor and hand-holding also help. I love safely removing large polyps.I have two grown children; my daughter is a physical rehabilitation PA in RDU, and my son is a game quality control specialist in Austin, Texas. My passions include crosswords, concerts, Broadway shows, sporting events, and traveling. Dr. Hutzenbuhler is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Collagenous Colitis. I’m a native North Carolinian and second generation gastroenterologist. I’m a general gastroenterologist, so I treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas. This includes heart burn, constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, and numerous other conditions. I also perform routine endoscopic procedures, such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. I love gastroenterology as a specialty because it requires a team effort from nurses, techs, and patients to provide quality care. Being from North Carolina, I treat my patients as family and encourage a dialogue with my patients as medicine is a balance of science and art. Every individual is different. When not working, I enjoy reading and hunting, but my main focus outside of work is my wife and two young sons. Duke Gastroenterology Clinic At Brier Creek
I am a general gastroenterologist who serves as medical director of Duke gastroenterology at Brier Creek. I see many patients with celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, reflux disease and diarrheal disease. Even though I work mostly in the outpatient setting, I do many procedures, including upper endoscopies and colonoscopies. There’s nothing I find more rewarding than telling a patient they won’t get cancer, because we’ve found and removed a troubling polyp. I encourage dialogue so patients feel involved in the decisions about their own care. I believe that a lot of medicine is an art, not a science. There’s often no perfectly “right” answer. Involving patients empowers them to take care of their own bodies and make decisions that are right for them. I started as a nutritionist, but wanted to focus on taking care of the entire body, so I switched to medicine. I also have an interest in women’s health.
