I specialize in performing advanced luminal endoscopic procedures, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of certain disorders of the esophagus and stomach, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), mucosal resection (EMR), full thickness resection (EFTR), and endoscopic suturing for the removal of lesions from the GI tract, as well as transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). It is important to me that my patients understand that they are part of the team when it comes to taking care of their gastrointestinal conditions. I will help them make the best decisions, but will not push them to do anything with which they are uncomfortable. Therefore, it is also very important to me that my patients feel well-educated about their gastrointestinal condition so that they can help make the decisions that are best for them. I am originally from Apex, North Carolina, and after many years away, I am excited to be back in the Triangle taking care of the community that raised me. Dr. Dufault is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Collagenous Colitis. My area of interest is inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. I also participate in clinical research to help evaluate new medications or products for use in IBD. These trials enable us to offer cutting-edge treatments for patients with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. I came to Duke as an intern almost 30 years ago and liked it so much I never left. I enjoy the relationships I have developed with my patients, some of whom I have treated for 15-20 years. I have watched many of them graduate from college, marry and have children of their own. I try to treat my patients as I would want a member of my family to be treated, and it is important to me that every patient understands that we are partners and need to work together as a team. I am thrilled to return to Duke Health after my recent retirement to provide much-needed part-time endoscopy services and improve access to colon cancer screening and surveillance. I first came to Duke from Kansas in 1989 and loved the pine trees and people so much that I never went back. I was the first female gastroenterologist (and 20 weeks pregnant) when I started private practice in Raleigh in 1994. After nearly 30 years of uninterrupted service to my beloved patients in central North Carolina, I retired in January 2024. It was difficult to give up my passion for gastroenterology, colonoscopy, and patient interaction. I am eager to return with a schedule that allows me to travel more with my husband. I enjoy meeting patients and easing their anxiety through rapport and detailed explanations. A little humor and hand-holding also help. I love safely removing large polyps.I have two grown children; my daughter is a physical rehabilitation PA in RDU, and my son is a game quality control specialist in Austin, Texas. My passions include crosswords, concerts, Broadway shows, sporting events, and traveling. Dr. Hutzenbuhler is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Collagenous Colitis. I’m a native North Carolinian and second generation gastroenterologist. I’m a general gastroenterologist, so I treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas. This includes heart burn, constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, and numerous other conditions. I also perform routine endoscopic procedures, such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. I love gastroenterology as a specialty because it requires a team effort from nurses, techs, and patients to provide quality care. Being from North Carolina, I treat my patients as family and encourage a dialogue with my patients as medicine is a balance of science and art. Every individual is different. When not working, I enjoy reading and hunting, but my main focus outside of work is my wife and two young sons. I am a general gastroenterologist who serves as medical director of Duke gastroenterology at Brier Creek. I see many patients with celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, reflux disease and diarrheal disease. Even though I work mostly in the outpatient setting, I do many procedures, including upper endoscopies and colonoscopies. There’s nothing I find more rewarding than telling a patient they won’t get cancer, because we’ve found and removed a troubling polyp. I encourage dialogue so patients feel involved in the decisions about their own care. I believe that a lot of medicine is an art, not a science. There’s often no perfectly “right” answer. Involving patients empowers them to take care of their own bodies and make decisions that are right for them. I started as a nutritionist, but wanted to focus on taking care of the entire body, so I switched to medicine. I also have an interest in women’s health. What is the definition of Collagenous Colitis?

Collagenous colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the colon. It is a form of microscopic colitis, which causes chronic diarrhea. In all forms of microscopic colitis, the colon appears normal or almost normal on colonoscopy, but the inflammation is visible when a biopsy of the colon is examined under a microscope (hence its name). People with this disease usually have between four and nine watery bowel movements per day, but in rare cases may have more than fifteen. Various other symptoms relating to the gastrointestinal system or other body symptoms may also be present. The cause of Collagenous colitis is not known but it is thought to be multifactorial. This means that both genetic and environmental factors may interact to cause a person to develop the disease. The extent to which genes play a role is unclear, but familial cases have been described. Certain medications, such as NSAIDS and proton pump inhibitors, have been reported to cause or trigger the disease in some people. However, strong evidence directly linking these medications to the disease is still lacking.

When should I see a Collagenous Colitis doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Collagenous Colitis doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Collagenous Colitis doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Collagenous Colitis doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Collagenous Colitis doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Collagenous Colitis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Collagenous Colitis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Collagenous Colitis doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Collagenous Colitis doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Collagenous Colitis doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Collagenous Colitis doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Collagenous Colitis doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Collagenous Colitis doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Collagenous Colitis doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
