Although I’m from Beaver, Pennsylvania, we moved to Tennessee to be near family who had relocated here. The sensible pace of life, beautiful seasons and strong family values of all the people we met here were the things that most attracted us to this region. Family medicine lets me interact with people of all ages and from all situations, allowing me to be on the front line of improving health. I also enjoy helping people navigate the complex medical system to get the care they need. By listening, I understand a patient’s priorities, and from there we can build a plan together. My wife, Michelle, and I have four young children. I love to be outside with my kids either working in the garden or riding bikes around town. I play the organ for Sunday services and organize meals and service projects for local missionaries. I am originally from the Philippines, and grew up in Manila, a big city much like New York or Los Angeles. When I finished medical school there, I began looking for residency programs in the U.S. During an interview at Quillen College of Medicine here in Johnson City, I just fell in love with this place. On my first visit, I was actually shocked at how small it was, but at the same time I liked the green grass, the trees, the quietness, the lack of traffic and how easy it is to get from one place to another in about 15 minutes. The friendliness of the people was one of the things that I noticed often. In big cities people hardly smile at you. But here, even people you don’t know smile at you, ask how you are and strike up conversations. When I was younger, I remember playing “doctor,” and thinking I would like to be one. I would mix powders and water in vials to make “medicine” and inject it into anything. Then in high school I realized how much I did love medicine. It was more of a desire to see people, talk to them, diagnose their problems and, hopefully, help them. It is a privilege to care for my patients; helping them understand what their medical issues are is of utmost importance to me. Cardiology is such a complex specialty, so I try to explain to them what their symptoms are, what could be the reason, and then from there come up with plans to do testing. Including patients as part of the decision-making process is key to growing our relationship as physician and patient it makes it easier when both doctor and the patient understand the plan and the goal. Away from work, I enjoy spending time with my two children and my beautiful wife, Carmina. To de-stress, I run or go to the gym almost every day and work in my yard almost every weekend. Also I spend a lot weekend time driving the kids back and forth to activities. While that may sound mundane, it is one of the most rewarding things I have the privilege of doing. Being a doctor is wonderful, but to me, being a father and a husband is the most special role of all. I have always called this area “home” since I grew up in the eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina region. Being a doctor has been my calling since childhood; I always knew that I would be a physician one day. I treat my patients with high quality and evidence-guided medical care. Cardiology is a unique specialty, and my interest has really changed over the years. Initially, I was interested because of diagnostics and imaging, being the radiology-based specialty that we are. However, in time I became more interested in the critical care aspect of cardiology and treating acutely ill patients. I actually went back for my MBA, not for the purpose of understanding the financial aspects of medicine, but rather how to deliver value and high quality care as some of the largest cost in medicine deals with cardiovascular disease. I have one child with special needs, so I do a lot of work with Shriners Hospitals for Children. I serve on their hospital board, and it has been a great joy in my life to help with their hospital systems. Shriners give away almost three-fourths of $1 billion dollars each year to support our 22 hospitals. It has been very rewarding to help administer that money, which is funded out of endowments and many individual donations. My particular Shriners Hospital is in Greenville, South Carolina, and many children from our area are treated there. Dr. Ponder is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Coronary Heart Disease. His top areas of expertise are Mitral Stenosis, Aortic Regurgitation, Atherosclerosis, and Coronary Heart Disease.

What is the definition of Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary heart disease is a narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is also called coronary artery disease.

What are the symptoms of coronary heart disease?

The most common symptom of coronary heart disease (CHD) is chest pain called angina. This can feel like pressure, tightness, or squeezing in the chest. Angina can happen during or after exercise or with intense emotions like anger or grief. The pain usually goes away after resting or taking a medication called nitroglycerin.

      Other CHD symptoms include:

      • Shortness of breath
      • Tiredness
      • Weakness
      • Dizziness
      • Fatigue
      • Feeling lightheaded

In serious cases, CHD can lead to a heart attack. A heart attack can feel like severe chest pain that doesn’t go away and may spread to the arms, neck, or back. Some people may feel sick to their stomach, break out in a sweat, or feel like their heart is thumping, racing, or fluttering. If symptoms of a heart attack are present, call 911 or visit the Emergency Room immediately.

How is coronary heart disease treated?

Treatment for CHD includes lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes surgery. Lifestyle changes involve eating healthier, staying active, quitting smoking, and managing stress. These changes improve heart health and prevent the disease from getting worse. Doctors may prescribe medicines to lower cholesterol, control blood pressure, or prevent blood clots. In some cases, a doctor may recommend a procedure like angioplasty, where a balloon is used to open blocked arteries, or bypass surgery, where a new path for blood flow is created. Regular check-ups with a doctor and sticking to the treatment plan are important for managing CHD.

Which doctors treat coronary heart disease?

Cardiologists are the main doctors who treat CHD. They specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels (e.g., arteries, capillaries, veins, etc.) If surgery is needed, a heart surgeon, called a cardiothoracic surgeon, may perform procedures like heart bypass surgery, valve repairs or replacements, and heart transplants. Primary care doctors may also help by managing overall health and making sure the disease doesn’t get worse. Other healthcare professionals, like dietitians and physical therapists, may help with nutrition and exercise.

What is the difference between coronary artery disease and coronary heart disease?

The terms coronary artery disease (CAD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are often used interchangeably, but CAD can lead to CHD. CAD happens when the arteries that bring blood to the heart get narrowed or blocked by a buildup of plaque. This plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances. When these blockages cause symptoms like chest pain, the condition is called CHD.

What is the life expectancy of someone with coronary heart disease?

Life expectancy for someone with CHD depends on several factors, including age, overall health, and how well they manage the disease. People who follow their doctor’s advice and make lifestyle changes – like watching their nutrition, managing stress, and quitting smoking – can live many years with CHD. Medicines that lower cholesterol and control blood pressure can also help improve life expectancy. Some people may need surgery to improve blood flow to the heart. Regular doctor visits are important to monitor the disease and catch problems early.

When should I see a Coronary Heart Disease doctor near Elizabethton, TN?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Coronary Heart Disease doctor near Elizabethton, TN?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Coronary Heart Disease doctors near Elizabethton, TN?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Coronary Heart Disease doctors near Elizabethton, TN?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Coronary Heart Disease doctor near Elizabethton, TN?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Coronary Heart Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Coronary Heart Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Coronary Heart Disease doctor near Elizabethton, TN?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Coronary Heart Disease doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Coronary Heart Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Coronary Heart Disease doctors near Elizabethton, TN?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Coronary Heart Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Coronary Heart Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Coronary Heart Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
