Dr. Ashok Muniappan

Dr. Wain joined the Brigham in February 2023 as a Surgeon, and Associate Chief of Quality and Safety, both for the Thoracic Surgery Department. Before joining the Brigham, Dr. Wain was the chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and the vice chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center He’s a member of various societies, including the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Wain received his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He completed residency training in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. After a surgical research fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Toronto General Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Wain is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Diaphragmatic Hernia. Dr. Shemmeri received her undergraduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She received a Doctor of Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. She completed resident training at North Shore University Hospital Long Island Jewish Medical Center and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Albany Medical Center.Dr. Shemmeri also completed a clinical and research fellowship in thoracic and foregut surgery at the Swedish Cancer Institute and Medical Center, a critical care clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a minimally invasive thoracic surgery fellowship at the Brigham.Her clinical interests focus on minimally invasive thoracic surgery and foregut and her research interests include clinical outcomes in foregut, specifically achalasia and esophageal cancer. Dr. Jon Wee is the Esophageal Surgery Section Chief, Director of Robotics in Thoracic Surgery, and co-Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also an Associate Program Director for Thoracic Surgery and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.Dr. Wee received his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine and completed his surgical training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He then went on to complete his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery.Dr. Wee’s clinical interest is in minimally invasive approaches to thoracic diseases. These include minimally invasive and robotic esophagectomy, lobectomy, thymectomy and mediastinal resection for thoracic malignancies.  In addition, he treats benign esophageal disease such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, giant paraesophageal hernias, diverticulum, etc. He performs POEM procedures for achalasia as well as sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis and endoluminal therapies such as PDT, laser, and stents for palliation. His research interest is in the use of minimally invasive techniques to decrease pain, improve recovery, and improve ultimate outcomes.
