Dr. Akash Patel is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He also serves as Faculty Senator and Residency Program Director of Neurosurgery at BCM; and is a Member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. A neurosurgeon in the treatment of both malignant and benign tumors of the brain and skull base, Dr. Patel focuses his research on determining the molecular underpinnings of inherited and sporadic forms of various brain tumors in an effort to develop targeted therapies to treat aggressive cases. His professional interests include: open and endoscopic surgery for malignant and benign brain tumors; skull base tumors; meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, and glioblastomas; brain tumor surgery in deep and eloquent brain regions; surgery and genetics of meningiomas and schwannomas; and neurofibromatosis. Dr. Patel received his medical degree from BCM after completing his undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at Rice University. He completed his residency at BCM. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. Additionally, Dr. Patel is a member of the North American Skull Base Society, Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
