I’m a pediatric neurologist and chief of pediatric neurology at Duke. My specialty is pediatric epilepsy. It’s extremely rewarding to treat a child because you are changing the life of not only the patient but also of their family. The most important thing in treating a patient is listening and forming a connection. You have to know where the patient and the family are coming from. By listening and observing, I can better understand their needs and then apply the most advanced knowledge and technologies to help them. There is a lot of patient education that goes on and it’s very important and most delightful to do that in close partnership and alliance with the family particularly in an often complex disorder like childhood epilepsy. Outside of work, I enjoy classical music, reading, biking, jogging and traveling, but what I truly enjoy most of all is taking care of patients. Dr. Mikati is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Epilepsy in Children. His top areas of expertise are Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, Epilepsy in Children, Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, and Increased Head Circumference.

I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do. Dr. Husain is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Epilepsy in Children. His top areas of expertise are Seizures, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure, Microvascular Decompression, and Spinal Fusion.

During my neurology and neurophysiology training at Duke, I developed an abiding fondness for my colleagues and patients, so it was an easy decision to stay on as an attending physician. I have the privilege of working with patients in both the hospital and clinic. As a hospital neurologist, my interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of acute neurologic problems, such as seizures, head injuries, infections, and autoimmune conditions. My outpatient practice focuses on the treatment of epilepsy in patients with hard-to-control seizures. In both the hospital and clinic, I have the pleasure of working with the excellent medical students, residents, and fellows of Duke University Hospital, along with nationally and internationally recognized colleagues. I am a neurologist and specialize in epilepsy. I see patients who have seizures and help them decide on a comprehensive plan for their diagnosis and treatment. I treat patients with seizures that are difficult to control. I also treat patients that have failed several medications and are looking for other options, such as surgery, clinical trials, and neuromodulation devices, such as responsive neurostimulation (RNS), vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). I also have an interest in treating female patients with epilepsy and the role hormones can play in their seizures (eg. pregnancy). I focus not only on helping my patients control their seizures, but also addressing the other issues that are associated with being an epilepsy patient, such as depression, quality of life, medication side effects, other neurological issues, and social issues. At Duke Health, we have conferences where our entire team of epileptologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, technicians, and neuropsychologists meet to discuss individual patients in order to offer the appropriate management. We believe in the timely identification of patients with seizures that are difficult to control and interventions to improve their quality of life. Dr. Parikh is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Epilepsy in Children. Her top areas of expertise are Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure, Seizures, Memory Loss, and Benign Rolandic Epilepsy.

I was drawn to neurosurgery during medical school when I first witnessed the unusually direct and positive impacts it could make for patients. At Duke Health, I now provide surgical treatments to people affected by epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. My background as a surgeon certainly shapes my interactions with my patients, yet I identify them and also myself more as somebody's sibling, friend, neighbor, and daughter or son. I strive to emphasize our shared perspectives because I believe they lead to the foundations of good care: empathy, respect, clear communication, and a strong focus on patient well-being and safety. I care for people living with seizures and epilepsy, including those with drug-resistant epilepsy. My focus is on finding the most effective and safest treatment strategy for each person; whether that’s medication, evaluation for epilepsy surgery, or neuromodulation therapies. I also work to identify related challenges like anxiety, depression, sleep, and/or cognitive issues, which can greatly affect quality of life. I chose this field because every seizure tells a story. No two journeys are the same and I believe that medical care should reflect that. I take the time to listen, understand, and partner with patients and their families to create a plan that supports their goals. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, playing the piano, and spending time with my family. Dr. Wadi is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Epilepsy in Children. Because of my family experiences I was drawn into the field of medicine early in my life. One of my close family members suffered from epilepsy since she was very young. I witnessed the adverse effect of epilepsy on socio-economic, education and quality of life of not just the patient, but the entire family. I learned that a doctor’s job is not only to prescribe medication but also provide education, counseling, and support when dealing with diseases like epilepsy. My two young children keep my wife and I active and on our toes. We take them hiking, camping, swimming, and any other outdoor activities possibly available that keeps them busy and promises a full night’s sleep. I enjoy woodworking and wood carving in my free time and enjoy seeing raw wood transformed into a useful daily accessory or an artistic gift. What is the definition of Epilepsy in Children?

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has repeated seizures over time.

A seizure is a sudden change in the electrical and chemical activity in the brain. A single seizure that does not happen again is not epilepsy.

When should I see an Epilepsy in Children doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Epilepsy in Children doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Epilepsy in Children doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Epilepsy in Children doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Epilepsy in Children doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Epilepsy in Children doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Epilepsy in Children doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Epilepsy in Children doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Epilepsy in Children doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Epilepsy in Children doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals.
