Dr. Anne M. Suskind is a urologist and a specialist in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She has special interests in urinary incontinence, complications with vaginal mesh (surgically implanted mesh that supports weak areas of the vagina, urethra or bladder), urinary fistulas, overactive bladder, bladder dysfunction due to neurologic disease and other forms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Suskind's approach to managing these conditions integrates surgical and nonsurgical methods, including physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor, medications, Botox injections for the bladder, urethral injections for stress urinary incontinence, various nerve stimulation techniques and complex urinary surgical reconstruction. To treat stress urinary incontinence in female patients, she offers different types of surgically placed slings (supportive structures that prevent the urethra from accidentally passing urine). She has extensive experience in urodynamic testing, which assesses how well the bladder and urethra function, and in interpreting the test results. The ultimate goal of Suskind's research is to improve care for unique and vulnerable older patients. She studies treatment outcomes in older adults who are frail and have urologic conditions, with a particular interest in understanding the unintended consequences associated with what are considered relatively minor urologic procedures. Her research leverages large national databases, such as Medicare claims data, to understand the impact of various urologic treatments for older patients throughout the country. Her research has won many national awards. Suskind earned her bachelor's degree at Haverford College, where she investigated the anthropological influences surrounding women's health issues and graduated with honors. She earned her medical degree from Albany Medical College, where she graduated with distinction in bioethics. She completed a residency in urology at the University of Connecticut. She completed a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) and a fellowship in health services research at the University of Michigan. During her fellowship training, she obtained a master's degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis from the University of Michigan's Rackham Graduate School. Suskind is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Suskind is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex. Her top areas of expertise are Urinary Incontinence, Stress Urinary Incontinence, Neurogenic Bladder, Sacral Nerve Stimulation, and Lithotripsy.

Dr. Laurence S. Baskin is a urologist and an expert in genital development and reconstructive surgery. His focus is on providing care for the spectrum of pediatric urological conditions, including undescended testicles; blocked kidneys and ureters; prenatal urinary tract obstruction, such posterior urethral valves; adolescent varicoceles (enlarged veins in the testicles); differences in sex development ; cancers of the genital and urinary organs; and disorders that require urinary tract reconstruction. He founded the UCSF Center for the Study and Treatment of Hypospadias to advance care for this birth defect of the penile urethra (the tube through which urine is voided). Baskin has written extensively on hypospadias and genital reconstruction, lectures extensively on these topics and has produced videos on numerous surgical techniques. His laboratory focuses on investigating the causes of pediatric urological diseases – both those present at birth and those that develop later – to advance the prospect for cures. The lab looks specifically at how cells communicate during normal and abnormal development and at the effects of abnormal environmental exposures during pregnancy. Baskin earned his medical degree at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He completed a general surgery residency at UCSF, followed by a fellowship in pediatric urology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Baskin is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics. What is the definition of Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex?

Exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) refers to a spectrum of birth defects that includes epispadias, classical bladder exstrophy, and exstrophy of the cloaca and several variants. EEC is characterized by a visible defect of the lower abdominal wall and other problems. In normal development, the cloacal membrane temporarily separates the cloaca (final part of the intestine) into urogenital and anal regions, and it ruptures after fusing with a structure known as the urogenital septum, which is made up of the tissue that will form the abdominal muscles (mesoderm). If the cloacal membrane does not fuse correctly with the urogenital septum, it does not form the mesoderm and, as a result, the abdominal muscles do not form. The exact timing of the rupture determines whether the child is born with isolated epispadias, classic bladder exstrophy, or cloacal exstrophy. Depending on severity, EEC may involve the urinary system, musculoskeletal system, pelvis, pelvic floor, abdominal wall, genitalia, and sometimes the spine and anus. There is no known cause for EEC. The University of Michigan has a webpage about the development of the embryo and its parts, including the formation of the cloaca.

When should I see an Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor in California, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor in California, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctors in California, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctors in California, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor in California, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor in California, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctors in California, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
