Dr. Richard Schmidt went to medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He attended Thomas Jefferson University for his internship and residency in otolaryngology before being called to a pediatric fellowship here at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. Having a family of his own, Dr. Schmidt empathizes with parents of children with health problems, so his care for a patient also includes caring for the family. After treating adults for seven years in a general otolaryngology practice, I began a fellowship in pediatrics. During this time, I found my calling and a stronger connection to my work by treating children. I'm passionate about providing the highest quality care to patients. I understand the unique challenges of treating children and believe that specialized care requires a specialized facility designed to handle those unique challenges. This is what led me to Nemours Children’s Hospital. I take my time with my patients and their families. I make a difference by personally being “in the moment” with a family and treating them like my own. I strive to emulate the values of my role model, my own childhood pediatrician. Dr. Schmidt is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Deafness. His top areas of expertise are Enlarged Adenoids, Otitis, Ruptured Eardrum, Adenoidectomy, and Myringotomy.

Originally from Connecticut, Dr. Taylor Teplitzky attended the University of Maryland Medical Center for both medical school and internship residency. She then performed a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Aside from her duties at Nemours, Dr. Teplitzky is an assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. At home, she enjoys spending time with her family and participating in her favorite hobby, figure skating. I chose to treat children to work with and understand the different aspects of the family unit. I understand the importance of not just caring for the patient but providing a deeper level of care to the family as well. I’m passionate about improving the lives of my patients. The specialty of otolaryngology cares for most of the ways we interact with each other and our environment around us. For me, treating complications that can allow a child to better interact with their surrounds is truly a special opportunity. I make a difference in the lives of others by providing the highest quality of care and working with each patient and their family as a unit. Dr. Teplitzky is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Deafness. Dr. William J. Parkes, IV, is a pediatric otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat surgeon). His medical interests include hearing loss, cochlear implantation, chronic ear disease and cholesteatoma, tympanoplasty, endoscopic skull base surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery.Dr. Parkes first became involved with Nemours as a medical student and resident. After his fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, he made the choice to come back to Nemours to continue his career, where his practice focuses on the care of children with complex ear and hearing problems. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with children, while also having the trust of parents to care for their children surgically. When I can care for a child and provide an answer to medical problems it is incredibly rewarding. I’m most passionate about participating in the multidisciplinary care of children with complex head and neck problems. Examples include my work as the medical director of the Cochlear Implant Team, co-director of the Minimally Invasive Skull Base Surgery program (a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University physicians) and co-lead surgeon for the surgical care of children with thyroid and parathyroid problems at Nemours. I find every interaction with children and their families, big or small, a chance to make a difference. Whether in clinic or the operating room, there are multiple opportunities to be impactful every single day. Dr. Parkes is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Deafness. His top areas of expertise are Ruptured Eardrum, Enlarged Adenoids, Otitis, and Hearing Loss.

What is the definition of Familial Deafness?

Familial deafness is a genetic loss of hearing that runs in a family. Most cases of familial deafness are non-syndromic, in which the individual does not have any other symptoms than deafness. Less than one-third of familial hearing loss is syndromic, in which the person has other symptoms, such as blindness, in addition to hearing loss. Familial deafness can cause hearing loss at birth or hearing loss that occurs later in life that may or may not progress.

When should I see a Familial Deafness doctor in Delaware, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Familial Deafness doctor in Delaware, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Familial Deafness doctors in Delaware, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Familial Deafness doctors in Delaware, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Familial Deafness doctor in Delaware, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Deafness doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Familial Deafness doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Familial Deafness doctor in Delaware, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Familial Deafness doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Familial Deafness doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Familial Deafness doctors in Delaware, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Deafness doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Familial Deafness doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Familial Deafness doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
