I have been a heart rhythm specialist at Duke for more than 15 years. My favorite part of my job is helping people. One of the nice things about electrophysiology is that we have the opportunity to fix many patients’ heart rhythm disorders. We use technology and medicines to fix heart arrhythmias that weren’t available just 10 to 15 years ago. I think the combination of Duke’s excellent facilities, being able to use the best available equipment in the field, and the very talented people that work here is what makes Duke such a special place. I’ve always felt that it’s a great privilege to work at Duke and with the tools available at this institution. Dr. Hegland is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect. His top areas of expertise are Heart Failure, Pulmonary Edema, Ventricular Tachycardia, Pacemaker Implantation, and Cardiac Ablation.

One of the main things I like about electrophysiology is fixing heart rhythm problems. I love it when patients are rid of a problem that they have had for a long time, and I can tell them they are cured. They can go do whatever they want and don’t have to worry about seeing a cardiologist again. A patient with a rapid heartbeat I’ve been seeing for about 10 years finally decided she wanted to have an ablation procedure. We talked about that a lot. She was very nervous. Finally, she decided to move ahead with the procedure. It only took about 90 minutes, and she was cured. She was very happy and couldn't believe that it was really gone. I practice exclusively at Triangle Heart Associates and Duke Regional Hospital, which provides easy and convenient access for patients. Dr. Donahue is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect. His top areas of expertise are Arrhythmias, Cardiomyopathy, Atrial Fibrillation, Pacemaker Implantation, and Cardiac Ablation.

I am excited about electrophysiology because it gives me the opportunity to improve patients' quality of life and allows patients to live longer in many cases. I ultimately went to medical school because of a passion for helping people, lifelong learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with my patients. I strongly believe in patient engagement and patient-centered decision making. Therefore, I believe that it is important to spend time educating patients and discussing all available treatment options. I encourage patients and their family members to ask questions so that I can help them understand their health. I offer medical therapy and catheter ablation therapy to patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and ventricular tachycardia. I also place transvenous pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators. I also perform lead extractions. I have two children, and I enjoy cooking, as well as playing golf, tennis, and skiing. Dr. Pokorney is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect. His top areas of expertise are Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Atrial Fibrillation, Arrhythmias, Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.

My focus is on heart rhythm problems. As a doctor, I work with patients to come up with a treatment plan that helps manage their condition. This may involve a cardiac ablation procedure or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. As a researcher, I spend a good portion of my time looking at health disparities with the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for people of all races, genders and ages. I’ve been at Duke since 1999, when I started my residency. I decided to become a doctor because I had an interest in biology while I was in college. I chose cardiology because it is highly technical and gives me the chance to really get to know my patients over the course of treatment. Focusing on the heart also allows me to make a greater impact on health care, since heart disease is so common in the United States. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including my two young children. Dr. Thomas is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect. I came to Duke as a visiting medical student many years ago and fell in love with this institution and its people. I love to be part of a group that contributes knowledge and discoveries every day. As an electrophysiologist, I treat people with heart rhythm disorders, including atrial arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias. I mostly focus on the prevention of sudden cardiac death and on patients with devices such as pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. We do everything we can to build a very good and strong relationship with patients; we provide them with the information they need and empower them to make the decisions that are best for them. We’re also at the cutting edge of new discoveries. The research we do is amazing – the findings that help patients and advance the field make working at Duke thrilling. It’s very exciting to be part of that. For these reasons, patients benefit greatly from coming to Duke. I chose to focus my research and practice on heart rhythm problems, because these problems, unlike many other heart conditions, can be cured. New treatment options for heart rhythm problems are rapidly evolving, which also makes this field very exciting. I have been at Duke for nearly 20 years. Both of my parents were involved in health care, so my choice of profession is part of a family tradition. I also went to a school where there was a strong tradition of community service, so I am thrilled that I get to wake up every day and get a chance to make a difference. As a heart rhythm specialist, I have the opportunity to make patients feel better right away without the use of many medications to help manage their condition, which I find extremely gratifying. I moved to North Carolina many years ago because of its natural beauty and still enjoy spending time outdoors as much as I can. I am a trained classical pianist and also play the cello. One of the special things about electrophysiology here is that we have we have a really large department. We have 13 electrophysiologists, which is more than some cities have. A unique aspect of Duke is that there is a lot of collegiality among our providers. We certainly approach patients as a team. That’s a huge benefit for patients coming to Duke. With such a large and unique department, we’re certainly able to deal with many complex patients. Some of my favorite patients are those I have followed for years. It’s an ongoing relationship that I have and seeing them come back and telling me about all the wonderful things they are doing is really satisfying. When should I see a Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
