I have a passion for caring for men with prostate cancer and helping them and their families make the best treatment decisions. I am nationally and internationally recognized as a prostate cancer expert and have performed more than 2,000 radical prostatectomies both at Duke and formerly at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I specialize in the nerve-sparing technique of surgery affording the best chance for sexual recovery. I have more experience with this small incisional open hands-on nerve-sparing operation than any surgeon in the Southeastern United States and am among the 10 most experienced surgeons using this technique in the United States. In addition to surgery, I have extensive experience managing men who have an elevated PSA and perform a gentle prostate biopsy using very liberal doses of local anesthesia. Our team also offers management of men who elect active surveillance for their early stage prostate cancer and are sensitive to men's needs regarding management of temporary urinary and sexual dysfunction related to prostate cancer treatments. We have a very experienced nursing team and a very experienced physician assistant who greatly assists in comprehensive and compassionate care. Dr. Moul is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Prostate Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Prostate Cancer, Familial Prostate Cancer, Enlarged Prostate (BPH), Prostatectomy, and Orchiectomy.

I specialize in the care of patients with urologic cancers – mainly prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and testicular cancer. A cancer diagnosis is one of the scariest things that can happen to someone. For many of our patients, they don’t necessarily feel different or look different, but they are scared to death. The most important thing you can get from Duke is real understanding of your particular case and what your options are. Knowledge is so reassuring and empowering for patients, especially those recently diagnosed with cancer. When you’re first diagnosed, you have to put your trust in a care team, and that’s hard to do if you don’t already know them. As the largest cancer center in North Carolina, Duke has great reputation and experience, which helps many patients chose Duke for their care. But we grow and develop our trust with patients because of who we are as people and how much expertise and care we bring to each case. Dr. George is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Familial Prostate Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Prostate Cancer, Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), Familial Prostate Cancer, Nephrectomy, and Orchiectomy.

Every day, my goal is to take the best surgical care of my patients' kidney or prostate cancer by offering the most up-to-date minimally invasive surgical treatments, while making sure that their experiences and outcomes at Duke Health are top-notch! As we look at the scans together and discuss biopsy results, it is important to me that I spend all of the time that my patients and their families need to clearly understand their diagnosis as well as all treatment options, so that we can make joint decisions about next steps and their treatment plan. Many of my patients are referred from all over the country to seek highly specialized urology care, including nonsurgical focal cryotherapy for prostate cancer, robotic surgery for prostate cancer, or robotic surgical removal of their kidney tumor called a partial nephrectomy, among other treatments, with our multidisciplinary, collaborative team. I always reassure and share my positive outlook with my patients as we navigate the health system together. My patients know that, as their physician, I will be their champion and advise them and guide them through their treatment. We are in this together. My goals are to develop and provide treatments that prolong and improve quality of the lives of patients with aggressive prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancer. This work involves the direct care of patients in the clinic and clinical research involving the development of new therapies in clinical trials. I devote over half of my time to understanding how prostate cancer spreads and resists therapies, as well as methods of measuring this biology in patients, which may lead to improved therapies designed to block this process. Outside of work, I have a busy family life with three children, and a wife who is a Duke pediatrician. I enjoy playing soccer and hiking. I am a urologic oncologist who is specifically trained in the surgical management of cancer. As a result of my fellowship and training, I feel very comfortable handling complex cancer cases. My patients are my favorite part of my job. I feel it’s incredibly important to make a connection with the patient and listen to them. It’s an amazing privilege to be able to take care of another human being and an honor to operate on someone. Surgery is a unique specialty, it’s a direct invasion of a person’s body and they are putting their trust in you. Duke is an amazing place. I was immediately attracted to Duke’s commitment of excellence when I first came here for training in the 1980s. Outside of my job, I enjoy fishing, golfing and spending time with my wife. I specialize in treating people with genitourinary (GU) cancers, such as bladder, prostate, testicular and kidney cancer. I don’t treat other types of cancer across the breadth of tumors like some oncologists in the community may, such as blood cancer, breast cancer or lung cancer. My focus has allowed me to gain deep expertise in GU cancers and to stay abreast of the newest treatment advances, clinical research and so on for those specific GU cancers. As a medical oncologist, I meet patients at one of the scariest moments of their lives. I try to help educate them to make a decision about their disease and its process, and what their treatment options may be, so we can come to a shared decision about what might be the best option. The teaching aspect really strikes home for me. Both of my parents are teachers. The root word for “doctor” in Latin means “to teach.” So that is something I’m both naturally called to do and enjoy doing. What is the definition of Familial Prostate Cancer?

Familial prostate cancer is a cluster of prostate cancer within a family. Most cases of prostate cancer occur sporadically in people with no family history of the condition. However, approximately 5% to 10% of prostate cancer cases are believed to be primarily caused by a genetic predisposition to the condition. In many families, the underlying genetic cause is unknown; however, some of these cases are caused by changes in the BRCA1, BRCA2, HOXB13, or several other genes. Other cases are likely due to a combination of gene(s) and other shared factors such as environment and lifestyle. High-risk cancer screening at an earlier age is typically recommended in men who have an increased risk for prostate cancer based on personal and/or family histories.

When should I see a Familial Prostate Cancer doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Familial Prostate Cancer doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Familial Prostate Cancer doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Familial Prostate Cancer doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Familial Prostate Cancer doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Prostate Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Familial Prostate Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Familial Prostate Cancer doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Familial Prostate Cancer doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Familial Prostate Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Familial Prostate Cancer doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Familial Prostate Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Familial Prostate Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Familial Prostate Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
