I am a gynecologic oncologist at Duke. I see women who have ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. I also see women with precancerous conditions of the gynecologic organs, which includes cervical dysplasia, vaginal dysplasia, and masses of the ovary that may or may not be cancer. I am fairly direct and let people know what they are dealing with up front. On the other hand, I try to keep everything positive. At this point in my career, I’ve had a lot of experience and will let patients know that while there’s a full range of outcomes that could happen, I have seen a lot of positive examples based on their condition. If I had cancer or a family member of mine had cancer, I would absolutely want them to come to Duke. It’s not just the standard treatments that we offer here, but also the attention to detail and access to world-class clinical trials. Dr. Havrilesky is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Febrile Neutropenia. Her top areas of expertise are Endometrial Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor, Hysterectomy, and Oophorectomy.

I see patients with blood related cancers, primarily lymphoma. I provide them with comprehensive care from the time they come in for diagnosis until they are cured. Duke is special because I can bring the power of a large medical center with expertise across disciplines together for the care of each patient. One of the nicest parts of my job is the Christmas cards I receive from patients that I’ve treated. For many patients who are doing well, we discharge them from the clinic after five years. The Christmas cards give me the opportunity to see that they are getting on with their lives and to hear about how their families are doing. Outside of work, my wife and I spend a lot of our free time with our two daughters and their children. We like the beach, biking and hiking as a family. I am a thoracic medical oncologist specializing in treating patients with cancers of the chest, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymic tumors. I also take care of patients with melanoma. Oncology is a multidisciplinary field; my role on the care team is to recommend medications to treat cancer, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapies. Navigating a cancer diagnosis can be scary and overwhelming. My goal is to make this journey less daunting by taking time to answer my patients' questions, getting to know them personally, and striving to treat all my patients as I would my own family members. This means I will be honest with you and take the time to explain treatment approaches so that, as a team, we can select the best treatment option for your priorities and goals. I love being part of the team at Duke because I am confident that we provide top-notch care across the board. When not at the hospital, you will probably find me spending time with my family, at a local sporting event, or pretending I know how to cook. Dr. Oswalt is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Febrile Neutropenia. I primarily see patients who have a variety of rare bleeding and clotting disorders. I see both older and younger patients and also provide help when patients need to transition to and away from blood thinners. Doctors usually refer patients to me. I try to work with each patient so they understand why they are seeing me and what is going on with their body. I enjoy when a patient can leave my office with a complete understanding of what is going on and what they need to do to get better. As a young child, I had bad allergies and spent much time in the doctor’s office. As a frequent patient, I enjoyed spending time around medicine. As I entered college, I found that I enjoyed chemistry and that hematology allowed me to combine lab work with patient care. Dr. Ortel is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Febrile Neutropenia. My practice and research focuses on patients who have female-specific cancers, such as ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer. I offer my patients access to variety of treatments, ranging from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation. My dad was a physician, and my mom was a nurse, so I was exposed to health care at an early age. I enjoy my work on female cancers, because it is one of the few subspecialties to blend surgery and chemotherapy. It also gives me the chance to develop strong relationships with my patients, since I get to take care of my patients before and during their surgery, as well as continue to see them for the rest of their lifetime. I’ve found those patients, who have been able to face their diagnosis with unwavering optimism, to be incredibly inspiring. I have three children, so outside of work I spend as much time as I can with my family. Dr. Alvarez is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Febrile Neutropenia. Her top areas of expertise are Ovarian Cancer, Endometrial Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Hysterectomy, and Intrauterine Device Insertion.

What is the definition of Febrile Neutropenia?

Febrile neutropenia, also called neutropenic fever, is a condition in which an individual has a fever greater than or equal to 101° F for at least an hour and a low neutrophil count. This is usually due to an infection. Febrile neutropenia commonly occurs as a complication in patients with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy.

When should I see a Febrile Neutropenia doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Febrile Neutropenia doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Febrile Neutropenia doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Febrile Neutropenia doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Febrile Neutropenia doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Febrile Neutropenia doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Febrile Neutropenia doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Febrile Neutropenia doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Febrile Neutropenia doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Febrile Neutropenia doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Febrile Neutropenia doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Febrile Neutropenia doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Febrile Neutropenia doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Febrile Neutropenia doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
