I am the division chief for Stroke and Vascular Neurology in the Department of Neurology at Duke Health. I see stroke patient in the emergency department, inpatient service as well as in the outpatient clinic. I also treated post-stroke limb spasticity, a disabling complication after stroke. In addition to the patient care, I also run a brain modulation and stroke recovery lab at the Duke University campus to study stroke patients in my lab to develop new stroke recovery therapy. On my days off, my boys and I are big on fishing. I enjoy drinking and collecting tea. As a stroke doctor, I do not drink coffee at all (there is a reason for it). If you come to see, I will tell you. Dr. Feng is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD). I see a wide variety of internal medicine patients with a range of health problems, from common conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, and thyroid problems, to complicated health issues. I enjoy the unique opportunity in primary care to build relationships with my patients over many years. My interest in medicine started while in elementary school. My inspiration was my mother, a physician herself. I was able to witness first-hand both the many lives she touched and the personal satisfaction she gained from being a physician. I joined Duke Primary Care in 2010, and have enjoyed my practice immensely. Outside my medical practice, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children. I also enjoy running, biking, hiking, yoga and I love to read books, fiction mostly. I am passionate about cooking, and have experimented with a variety of cuisines. Dr. Shivadas is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD). Her top areas of expertise are Familial Hypertension, Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism, Hypertension, and Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia.

I usually take care of two types of patients. One is patients with coronary artery disease who have blockages in the heart arteries. The other is peripheral artery disease with blockages in the leg arteries. I treat patients both in the clinic and in the hospital. In the hospital, I provide treatment opening these blockages with balloons and stents. Duke is unique because of its ability to provide innovative treatments to patients. A lot of places around the state and country can provide standard of care, and I think Duke does a really good job of offering that. But the thing that really sets Duke apart is the ability to go one step further and provide new treatments that may provide benefits that others can’t offer. I met a patient early in my training who really had no options for treatment. She had a blockage in a leg artery that we could not open with a balloon and stent. We injected her with cells under a research protocol, and she really experienced a tremendous benefit. We thought it would be short-lasting but we saw her back a couple of months ago and she’s still doing well. That really solidified my interest in doing research on these novel, innovative treatments to our patients. Dr. Schuyler is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD). His top areas of expertise are Angina, Arterial Insufficiency, Peripheral Artery Disease, Arterial Embolism, and Atherectomy.

I am an interventional cardiologist and researcher who has been at Duke for nearly 20 years. I enjoy being at Duke because of the “family” I get to work with every day. When we are able to make a patient feel better through teamwork; it’s a great feeling. I chose cardiology as my specialty because of the chance to make a difference in someone’s life in real time. When someone is having a heart attack, they are relying on you to come to their aid quickly. At that moment, I get to apply science to save a life, while learning more about what we can do to help improve people’s lives in the future. In that way, medicine also gives me the chance to learn from my patients and apply what I find to benefit the greater good. I find that whole process is exciting. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my school-aged children. Dr. Patel is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD). His top areas of expertise are Peripheral Artery Disease, Atherosclerosis, Coronary Heart Disease, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), and Angioplasty.

What is the definition of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD)?

Fibromuscular dysplasia is a rare condition that affects cell growth in arterial walls, making the arteries narrow, enlarge, or bulge. Fibromuscular dysplasia can affect many different arteries such as carotid, renal, coronary, and mesenteric arteries.

When should I see a Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
