This includes instruction and encouragement on diet, sleep, stress reduction and exercise, including strength training. It is important to her to let patients know how lifestyle modifications can lower the risk of cancer recurrence. She serves as medical director of the UCSF-John Muir Health Cancer Center in Berkeley. Throughout her career, Marshall has been helping patients participate in clinical trials to evaluate cancer treatments, starting at Yale New Haven Hospital as a fellow and faculty member in the breast care unit and stem cell transplantation program, and later working in New Mexico and California in community oncology (which seeks to provide quality cancer care close to where patients live) and private practice.
