I studied hard, became an EMT, volunteered at a firehouse, worked ski patrol in college and taught the winter care emergency course to my fellow patrollers. We have been on the leadership team for the Philadelphia March of Dimes' annual March for Babies for several years. Why I entered medicine | The men in my family traditionally studied engineering, and so becoming a chemical engineer felt like a natural fit for me. But when I was working for DuPont and then Nestle, I realized I was missing out on what I really liked most -- more direct contact with people. My father ran his own small business manufacturing parts out of metal and plastic to build different type of machines. This was the “family business,” so that’s where I spent many of my nights and weekends as a child. I was working on lathe and milling machines when I was about 8 years old. As an adult, I needed to work with my hands -- and not just with a pencil or computer. Surgery, particularly orthopedic surgery, allows me to do that.
