"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I knew that there was a baby inside the mother's abdomen, but it was amazing to see the doctors deliver it. To see it just ""pop out"". Still, to this day, I get that feeling of awe and amazement every time I help a mom deliver her baby. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful moment in a family's life. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I take care of sick moms, sick babies, and sick pregnancies. Each day, while I get to help women and their families with big wins and happy moments, I also have the opportunity to help them through sad times and some of the worst moments of their lives. It is these hard and sad moments that make the happy ones even more meaningful. I also spend some of my time helping to teach medical students about Ob/Gyn. My particular niche in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is prenatal diagnosis, but I do a little bit of everything. The special thing about maternal-fetal medicine here at Duke is that the group is really cohesive in terms of getting along really well, working well together and having a variety of interests within the division. In addition, Duke also has a lot of other subspecialties that we work closely with and which have a lot of interest in pregnancy, so we’re able to collaborate with them. In medical school, I had a great interest in women’s health and loved my OB/GYN rotation and residency. I very much admired the maternal fetal physicians in my residency program. I had great respect for what they did. They were able to take the difficult part of obstetrics and still enable women to have a positive birth experience. That really inspired me. I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school.
