My clinical practice if focused on the care of patients with breast cancer, particularly those diagnosed at a younger age and those with recurrence in the central nervous system. I am committed to the care of patients with breast cancer brain metastases, and I am honored to serve as the Medical Director of the Brain and Spine Metastases Program in the Duke Cancer Center. In this role, our multidisciplinary team provides well-coordinated care for patients with breast cancer and other solid tumor types that have metastasized to the central nervous system. In addition, I enjoy helping young women diagnosed with breast cancer navigate their treatment decisions to ensure both excellent medical care and attention to individual challenges, such as future fertility, sequelae of treatment on longer-term health, and impact on current and future relationships. When not working, I enjoy running, reading, and traveling with my family. Dr. Anders is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer. As a cancer doctor, I strive to provide the kind of care that I would want for my own family. My aim is to use my expertise, knowledge, and understanding of the human condition to empower patients. While scientific knowledge and approaches are at the core of what I do, I find it important to aim to integrate the human context into what my team and I offer patients and their families. Having lived, trained, and worked in different countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States, I have developed unique insights into the practice of medicine and cancer care around the world. These experiences have given me a broader perspective and helped inform my approach to individualized patient care. I see my ability to help patients as a privilege, and I do get enormous pleasure from being able to help. I'm a radiation oncologist, and I specialize in treating brain, base of skull and spine tumors, as well as tumors that arise in the body but go to the brain or the spine, as in certain cases of lung, breast and kidney cancer and melanoma. When I meet with a patient, it’s important for me to introduce them and their family to our team of doctors, therapists, nurses and treatment planners. The patient and their family will also become members of this team – truly the most important part - so we can work together to tailor care based on their wants and needs. At Duke, we’ve developed techniques to precisely and accurately treat small, complex lesions and tumors. We can minimize the amount of radiation that goes into normal tissues and at the same time maximize the amount of radiation where it is needed. Our team is geared to delivering every treatment to each patient exactly as planned, especially in complicated and difficult situations. As a patient or a physician, I think there’s no better place to be than Duke. I love my work, feel honored that my patients place their trust in our team and me and work hard to earn that trust. I am a radiation oncologist with a particular focus on the management of women's health malignancies. I specifically work with breast and gynecologic cancer patients. I believe a critical part of patient care is appreciating where patients are during this difficult time, and providing them with the tools and understanding they need to both feel comfortable and make informed decisions. My job provides me with the opportunity to really get to know my patient’s on a personal level. It’s one of the parts I enjoy most about my job: understanding and appreciating who the patient is beyond their diagnosis, and working towards what matters most to them. Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy spending time with family and helping my young children discover the world around them. What is the definition of HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer?

HER2-positive breast cancer is a subtype of breast cancer that contains human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), which is a protein that increases the growth of cancer cells. One out of five breast cancers contain the HER2 protein. Eighteen-to-twenty percent of invasive breast cancers are HER2-positive, which are more aggressive than other breast cancers, more likely to spread and relapse, and have resulted in a decreased survival rate in the past. While previously considered to be the most aggressive type of breast cancer, HER-2 positive breast cancer can now be treated with new biologic targeted therapies that have significantly improved outcomes. HER2-positive breast cancer is categorized in stages that take into account the diameter of the tumor, whether the cancer has spread to axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, and whether the cancer has spread to other organs, such as the liver, lung, brain and bone. Staging allows for treatment plans that target each patient’s individual breast cancer disease. Early breast cancers are staged based on the following criteria: Stage 0 – Ductal cancer in situ (DCIS), or a noninvasive breast cancer that is limited to the ducts. Stage I (A/B) – Cancer has spread from ducts to the surrounding fatty breast tissue. Tumor is smaller than 2 centimeters and has not spread to lymph nodes. Stage II (IIA/B) – Cancer has spread from ducts to the surrounding fatty breast tissue and may have spread to near lymph nodes. Tumor is between 2-to-5 centimeters wide. Advanced breast cancers are staged based on the following criteria: Stage III (IIIA/B) – The tumor is larger than 5 centimeters, cancer may or may not have spread to lymph nodes, or the tumor is smaller, and cancer has spread to lymph nodes. Stage IV – Metastatic Breast Cancer. Cancer has spread to lymph nodes and other parts of the body, with other organs affected, such as liver, lungs, brain, or bones.

When should I see a HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the HER-2 Positive Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
