I first recognized my passion for taking care of cancer patients during my internal medicine residency in the 1990s. At that time, new treatments were emerging and our understanding of this terrible and complicated disease was beginning to accelerate. I remember waking up each morning with new energy to get into the hospital to take care of my patients. Oncology embodied all of the reasons why I went into medicine; the compassion, the emotional connections, the incorporation of not just medicine, but psychological, emotional, and spiritual care. I enjoy getting to know my patients. I share in their joys and their challenges, and many almost become an extension of my family. In my time away from my patients, I enjoy spending time with my wife, four children and two dogs as well as oil painting, running, and cooking. I see patients with blood related cancers, primarily lymphoma. I provide them with comprehensive care from the time they come in for diagnosis until they are cured. Duke is special because I can bring the power of a large medical center with expertise across disciplines together for the care of each patient. One of the nicest parts of my job is the Christmas cards I receive from patients that I’ve treated. For many patients who are doing well, we discharge them from the clinic after five years. The Christmas cards give me the opportunity to see that they are getting on with their lives and to hear about how their families are doing. Outside of work, my wife and I spend a lot of our free time with our two daughters and their children. We like the beach, biking and hiking as a family. Dr. Diehl is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma. His top areas of expertise are Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), B-Cell Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, and Bone Marrow Aspiration.

I was drawn to the field of oncology because cancer is a terrifying diagnosis for most people. It is one of those health issues that make people very nervous. I find great satisfaction working with cancer patients to help allay their fears and provide the best care possible. For me, it is rewarding to work with individuals who express so much courage in overcoming a difficult diagnosis. It is very rare that a patient comes alone to an appointment. Usually they have a spouse, son or daughter, a brother or sister, or a mother or father accompanying them. I spend a lot of time answering family member’s questions, who often provide a significant amount of care and support for their loved one. My job is to help educate both the patient and the family and to formulate a plan by which we can provide comprehensive care for all of the patient’s needs. Dr. Kelsey is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

I study disorders of the bone marrow and bone marrow failure syndromes. I also see some leukemias and lymphomas and other blood malignancies. Duke offers a very personalized, individualized level of care to each patient. Nobody is the same, so we take the whole patient, we listen to them, and we offer our best recommendations for treatment options. We offer some of the latest treatment options that are available, usually in the setting of a clinical trial. If not, we offer the latest advancement in the field. When I was going through medical school, molecular biology was the new field. Everything was being described as a new cancer-causing gene. And to me that was so appealing – we’re going to figure out what causes cancer and new ways to treat it. That’s what really brought me into the hematology oncology world – things were being discovered that were new and exciting and hopefully would lead to new treatment options. Duke offers an extremely high standard of care. Though we’re not always successful and the disease sometimes wins, our goal is to give the patients the best possible care. Dr. De Castro Iii is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma. His top areas of expertise are Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH), Aplastic Anemia, Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia without Maturation, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), and Bone Marrow Aspiration.

What is the definition of Hodgkin Lymphoma?

Hodgkin’s lymphoma, also known as Hodgkin’s disease, is one of the most common types of lymphatic cancer (cancer of the immune system) and is one of the most curable forms of cancer. Lymphoma is a term used to describe cancers that affect the lymph nodes and lymph system (immune system), which is also composed of many blood vessels and organs, including the spleen, areas of the intestines, thymus gland, tonsils, and adenoids. Hodgkin’s lymphoma has two main types: 1) Classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and 2) nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma is the most common type of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is characterized by large, abnormal cells (Reed-Sternberg cells) in the lymph nodes and is divided into four subtypes: 1) nodular sclerosis Hodgkin’s lymphoma, 2) mixed cellularity Hodgkin’s lymphoma, 3) lymphocyte-depleted Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and 4) lymphocyte-rich Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Nodular sclerosis Hodgkin’s lymphoma is rare, grows more slowly than classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is characterized by large, abnormal cells called popcorn cells, is treated differently, and has a better chance of cure. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is categorized by the following stages: Stage I – The lymphoma is only in one lymph node region or a single organ. Stage II – The lymphoma is in two lymph node regions or has spread (metastasized) to one organ and its nearly lymph nodes but is limited to either above or below the diaphragm. Stage III – The lymphoma has spread to the lymph nodes both above and below the diaphragm and may have spread (metastasized) to tissue near an organ, lymph nodes, or the spleen. Stage IV – In this advanced stage of lymphoma, the cancer has spread (metastasized) to several areas of one or more organs or tissues and affects the lymph nodes and other areas of the body, such as the lungs, liver, or bone. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is further described as either A (no significant symptoms) or B (significant symptoms, such as chronic fever, unexplained weight loss, and severe night sweats).

When should I see a Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Hodgkin Lymphoma doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Hodgkin Lymphoma doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Hodgkin Lymphoma doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Hodgkin Lymphoma doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
