I started my nurse practitioner career with the Duke Hematologic Malignancies team in 2017 caring for patients with lymphoma. I very much enjoy developing relationships with my patients and their family members. I find this to be crucial to successfully managing not only symptoms during active treatment but also goals of care throughout what often is a long working relationship together. I help to take care of patients with different cancers of the blood, such as lymphoma. Part of my role is to assess patients and evaluate their labs to make it is safe for them to receive treatment that day. I have always enjoyed working with cancer patients and their families. It’s a very meaningful type of work. I think it is essential as providers that we understand our patients, where they’re coming from, and what illness means to them, so we can best take care of them. I try to remember when I’m meeting with patients and their families that, while this is my job, this their life, and this is a stressful time for them. It is a privilege to be asked to be a part of their care. I think it is important to check in with patients to let them know we are hearing them, validating them, and encouraging them.
