Like many, I took a circuitous route to medicine. I studied chemistry in college and thought that I would pursue a career in research or public health. While these areas still interest me, I gravitated to medicine because of a desire to work directly with patients on improving their health and well-being. Through my training, which has included fellowship work in counseling, I have learned that many factors influence health, including relationships and other social supports.
